Is Call of Cthulhu Worth It?

Call of Cthulhu is a very different game that is inspired by the H.P. Lovecraft short story. If you want a game that has a weird and twisted storyline, then this is the game for you. It is a horror/mystery game that will keep you invested all the way to the end. The areas are constantly changing and it makes for a great experience that is different in every area you explore. I just have to say that the game is definitely worth playing. Here are some asked questions about the game:

How is the story?

The story is very different from other games like it because it is based on an actual short story from the past. The main character is a Boston-based investigator named Edward Pierce who is suffering from a severe lack of cases to solve. In 1924 this war veteran turned detective indulges in alcohol and pills as a means to cope. A man named Stephen Webster pays him a visit and asks him to reopen the case regarding his daughter Sarah Hawkins.

Edward is asked to uncover the truth, but the only clue he has is an odd picture painted by the mother shortly before her demise. It features a dark figure and a strange symbol. He sets off to Darkwater Island to begin his investigation. While there, he discovers the impending revival of the Great Old One Cthulhu.

What is different about the game?

All the different occult aspects of the game make it a unique experience only people who have played the game will understand. From the way everything works in the game to all the different letters and secrets you can discover, there is a lot of stories that most people don’t even take the time to look at. The game is unique and I don’t really want to say a lot about it because of spoilers, but I am telling you that it is definitely worth playing.

How are the mechanics?

While talking with other NPC’s, Edward will have multiple choices of dialog until discovering leads close to answers, at which point, the options will be narrowed down. In some cases, available dialog and options will be based on the skills the player has chosen. Pretty much what you choose, determines the ending you get in the game. Make sure you choose wisely and don’t make any mistakes.

The tools the player will use to investigate include Reconstruction Scenes, which allow Edward to take a look into the past and review events by reconstructing clues, and Hidden Spots, which helps the player to find hidden objects and more information.

How long does it take to beat?

It is not that long of a game because it takes 6-8 hours to beat and maybe a little longer if you want to find all the secrets the game has to offer. If you can find the game cheaper or on sale, then get the game right away, but even though it is a fun game, I would recommend buying it cheaper. It is pretty short unless you are planning on playing through all the endings, then it is worth it at full price.

Is it linear or free roam?

It is a little of both. I mean, the game takes you to different areas and you have the freedom to explore that area all you want to. The thing is, once you leave that area, you can’t go back so you have to spend a lot of time in each of them to make sure you get everything to help you in your journey. It is a semi-open world so don’t go in expecting fully free roam.

Is it worth it?

Yes, the game is definitely worth it, if you can get it on sale. I loved the game, but I only played through it once and it is better if you get it on sale. As I said before, it is a short game so it just depends on how many times you want to play through the game, because your next playthrough could be entirely different than your last. If you do get it, then have a fun time playing. If you don’t, that is totally fine.
