You can have a total of 1 weapon and 1 piece of armor that can be equipped at one specific time. When to dismantle them You should dismantle Exotic items when you are done with that specific item, you don't like the item at all, you have a better Exotic item than the previous one, or you want more upgrade materials for other pieces of gear. Personally, I highly recommend saving every Exotic item you can because the more you have in the future, the more you can dismantle at once. In some situations, there will be special events that reward you better for your dismantled item, and those are worth the wait of dismantling. Not a lot of people think about how short-sighted it is to just dismantle everything they have. Sometimes you might need certain weapon types and items to complete quests, so I recommend trying to keep the best items you have because of their easy access from your storage. The storage is a really important place; you can keep all the items there that you aren't currently using, but you still want to keep.
