Black Myth Wukong: Fox Quest Guide

Black Myth Wukong: Fox Quest Guide

Black Myth Wukong’s second chapter ends with a mournful tale of a fox. This is a foreshadowing of an upcoming side quest in the third chapter that sees you exact revenge on the one who betrayed the fox. It is a story of broken dreams and helping a tortured spirit get closure and move on to greener pastures.

If the mopey stuff doesn’t pull you in, completing this quest will uncover a secret boss and some sweet rewards for your noble efforts. Whatever your motivation, it is payback time!

Step 1: Encountering the Fox

Progress normally through Chapter 3 – The New West. In the middle of the chapter, you’ll slide down a snowy slope and land in the Valley of Ecstasy. Continue ahead, and you’ll unlock the Forest of Felicity Keeper’s Shrine.

corpse wearing a fancy fox pelt

Right in front of the Shrine is an archway with a corpse at its base wearing a fancy pelt. Examine the body, and a mysterious voice will begin narrating its account.

The pelt is, in fact, the spirit of the fox guai shown in the cutscene mentioned above. The story revolves around the fox getting rescued by a scholar, and while the spirit was dreaming of returning the favor, the scholar ended up killing the poor mythical creature.

Now, she wants to confront the monk in the New Thunderclap Temple, get her vengeance, and bring solace to her lamenting existence. For that reason, she wants you to take her to the scholar.

Fox Spirit

After further examining the corpse thrice, a cutscene will initiate, in which the spirit jumps out of the body and moves inside you, transforming you into the fox itself. She also gives you the Snow Fox Brush key item.

Wukong as the fox
Snow Fox Brush Wukong

Don’t worry; the fox form isn’t permanent! You can transform back to Sun Wukong at any time, either by choice or when you get hit a certain number of times. You can always transform back into the fox by selecting the Snow Fox Brush from your Inventory.

Note: You don’t have to reach the end goal as the fox. You can continue as Sun Wukong and transform only when we tell you to.

I prefer to use the fox transformation when bee-lining to the target. This just helps me cut down on unnecessarily inflating my playtime. You move fast while in this state, and your hitbox is small, lowering your chances of getting hit as you scurry past enemies. Monkey or fox, it is your choice!

Step 2: Traveling to the New Thunderclap Temple

Longevity Road Keeper's Shrine Wukong

After you have received your objective, push through the archway and advance through the pretty much linear path until you reach the Longevity Road Keeper’s Shrine. From here, push straight ahead to the end of the path(be careful; there are a lot of enemies in this field), and you’ll notice a path on the right with pillars on the sides.

Captain Kalpa-Wave Black Myth Wukong Boss

Take the track leading to the temple entrance. A boss, Captain Kalpa-Wave, blocks the entry. This is a brutal boss, so invest in upgrading your armor to increase your chance at survival. If you need help handling the boss, then check out the video guide below:

After you are done with the boss, rest at the New Thunderclap Temple’s Temple Entrance Keeper Shrine just ahead.

Step 3: Reaching the Monk (Objective)

From the shrine, I like to take the form of the fox and blow past the enemies along the way. Many enemies patrol the temple, so handle them however you like.

Here is where you have to go step by step:

Temple Entrance shrine
  • Head through the building in front of the Temple Entrance shrine until you reach the courtyard with two staircases.
Take the left stairway Wukong
  • Climb the left stairway.
downward stairs between two pillars Fox Spirit
  • Turn right from these stairs and look to the left for a set of downward stairs between two pillars. An enemy will be standing guard between the pillars.
Lower courtyard
  • Jump down to the lower courtyard and quickly enter the building ahead. Use the rightmost door.
Small stairs on the right
  • As you enter the building, take the small ascending red stairs on the right. Be careful, as an enemy is waiting in the middle of the flight of stairs. Either kill him or run away quickly.
right from the Balcony Wukong
  • Exit the door after climbing the stairs, turn right from the balcony, and then right again to the next yard with giant stairs leading up. At this point, transform into Sun Wukong and kill any pursuing enemies.
Objective building
  • Ascend the staircase, and two foes will be guarding the entrance to the monastery. Take them out. This is where your target hides.

Before entering the building, you must transform into the fox. If you don’t, you can only interact with the NPC inside; however, if you are in the fox form, this will trigger a cutscene when you enter.

Monk meeting fox

During the cutscene, the monk is terrified of the fox’s arrival while admitting his remorse for murdering the poor thing. But instead of offering his life as a genuinely guilty person, he suggests by killing the fox again, he’ll be giving it a peaceful end! Thus begins the Non-Void secret boss fight.

Step 4: Fighting Non-Void

Fighting Non-Void Wukong boss

Non-Void is one slippery devil. He’s constantly dodging and turning into a wraith, whereby your hits will pass through him. Here are all the attacks at his disposal:

  • Slap: A single yet humiliating slapping.
    • Reaction: When he folds his arm, get ready to dodge away from the incoming slap.
  • Palm Blast: Takes a step towards you and thrusts his palm forward, sending out a small amount of energy.
    • Reaction: Dodge to the side when his foot lands forward.
  • 3-Hit Combo: A simple three-punch flurry.
    • Reaction: Notice his arm rearing and then back off. Let him exhaust the combo then move in to punish.

To avoid his slick tactics, apply a hit-hard and hit-fast counterstrategy. As an opening silo, swarm him with your A Pluck of Many clones and a non-stop barrage of light attacks.

If you upgrade the spell with better skills, you’ll benefit greatly from your onslaught. Quickly using your spirit attack and immediately transforming into your most hard-hitting spirit (I prefer the Wandering Wight) will give him no time to react.

If you played all your powerful cards at the start, chances are Non-Void’s health will be critically low by the end. Then onwards, it’s just a matter of keeping up the pressure. He has to materialize whenever he is about to attack; these are the windows you must exploit.

Non-Void will soon be drifting into the void for his heartless acts!

Non-Void drops the following rewards:

  • 1,174 Will
  • Tonifying Decoction
  • 2x Cold Iron Leaves
  • Blood of the Iron Bull
  • Non-Void Spirit

Step 5: Return to the Fox

Snow Fox Brush Curios piece Black Myth Wukong

After defeating the boss, go to the nearest shrine and fast-travel back to the Forest of Felicity Keeper’s Shrine.

Return to where the corpse with the pelt lies and interact with it. The spirit will go on about men’s horrible nature and how they are just as vile as the things they fear. The pelt will then become the fox spirit and fade away, fulfilling its purpose.

At the end, you will receive the Snow Fox Brush Curios piece. When equipped, it will increase the duration of Transformation. It’s an excellent item if your build revolves around transformations.

And that’s the end of the fox quest.

The way this quest is shown in the previous chapter, the stop-motion cutscene, the heartbreaking story, and the payoff at the end make it one of the best side content in the entire game. Not to mention, the prizes are just as rewarding.
