Does Armor Affect Vehicle Speed in Grand Theft Auto 5?

Grand Theft Auto V is not only a preposterously enjoyable video game but also features tons of customizable options for the player to choose from. Whether it’s the smooth controls of a helicopter or the fluid upgrade path of a bike, there is always a new aspect to learn.

However, there are times when Grand Theft Auto can get a bit too realistic, making you think of factors that are not even present in the game. Such is the case between the armor and your vehicle.

To put it bluntly, no matter how much armor you stack up, your car’s speed won’t go down. In GTA, adding armor doesn’t add weight to the car. Hence, there is no effect on the car’s performance. Therefore, it is only a stat that has no relation to the physics engine aside from the damage reduction.

Hence, it is recommended to stack armor on your vehicle in order to protect it. There are no downsides to it. Plus, it is a good way to upgrade your vehicle after maxing all other properties.

How Does Armor Affect Your Car in GTA V?

There are a total of five armor options available for your car in Grand Theft Auto 5. You can go from 20% to 100% armor. However, it is worth understanding that 100% will only double the initial armor. There is no invulnerability for Vehicles. Here are the armor upgrades along with their respective prices:

UpgradePriceOnline PriceEffect
NoneDefaultDefaultNone
20%$500 – 1,625$4,500Increases the vehicle’s defense by 20%
40%$1,250 – 4,068$7,500Increases the vehicle’s defense by 40%
60%$2,000 – 6,500$12,000Increases the vehicle’s defense by 60%
80%$3,500 – 11,375$21,000Increases the vehicle’s defense by 80%
100%$5,000 – 25,000$30,000Doubles the vehicle’s defense.

Armor prices in GTA V can feel a bit high but it is worth it considering the amount of defense they are able to provide. Unfortunately, the 100% is the final upgrade. Aside from not adding weight, it does not change your vehicle’s appearance.

Other Base Upgrades in GTA V

Aside from armor, there are also other vehicle stats that can be upgraded. Here is the list of the most common ones available in almost every car:

  • Brakes
  • Engine
  • Transmission
  • Turbo

If you take a look at the stat bars and think that you are done with upgrades, beware! The stats bars are not as accurate as they should be. So, keep upgrading if there’s room for it.

Ultimately, even if you upgrade your armor to the max, it should have no effect on any of your vehicle stats aside from defense. It is better to raise this stat because of the reliability it gives.

However, armor will not make your car invincible. Therefore, take good care of your cars to minimize their chances of exploding. If your car feels slow or sluggish then consider taking it to Los Santos Customs.
