Furnace Golems are some of the most challenging elite enemies in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree. You encounter them pretty early on, and with their ginormous health, simply hacking away with a sword or a spell isn’t going to cut it.
This guide will cover in detail how you can beat a Furnace Golem, where you can find each one, and other tricks to help you along the way.
All Furnace Golems Locations
There are a total of 8 Furnace Golems in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree. You will find them in almost every region of the Shadow Realm. You will find them roaming around in the area. They will normally just keep walking in circles and will only attack you when you are within a certain proximity.
There are two types of Furnace Golems: Regular and Armored. From a distance, you won’t be able to tell the difference. It is only when you get close and look at their feet that you can tell them apart.
We will discuss how to take down each one in the next section of this guide.
How to Beat Furnace Golems in Elden Ring DLC
The first type and the more common ones are the regular Furnace Golems. The key difference between both types is the way their ankles are protected. The regular golems don’t have any special protection around their ankles hence, they are relatively easier to take down.
Regardless, if you don’t know what you are up against, it can prove to be a bit of a challenge. That is why we must first understand how they attack.
Moveset
The Furnace Golem will use the following attacks against you.
- Leg Stomp: It will use this attack when you are really close to the Golem, somewhere around their feet. You will see a fire charge surging in one of the legs. It will then raise its leg in the air and stomp it on the ground, creating an AoE with fire erupting in a small area.
- Counter: This attack is the most common and also easy to counter. The moment its leg is about to hit the ground, jump up and you will be safe from the damage.
- Double Leg Stomp: This attack is somewhat similar to the Leg Stomp but as the name suggests, the monster will use both of its legs. It will charge the attack, indicating that it’s coming. When it is fully charged, it will jump in the air and slam both feet on the ground. The effect will be similar to a single leg stomp but the intensity and AoE are much greater.
- Counter: You will have to use Torrent for this one. As soon as you see the legs charging, mount on your Torrent, run away as far as you can, and jump at the same instant the Golem’s feet make contact with the earth.
- Fire Kick: This is one of its ranged attacks. It usually comes when you are first running towards it. The Furnace Golem will kick the ground, creating several fire rocks that appear and are launched towards you.
- Counter: We suggest you use Torrent to avoid this one as well. When you see the giant fire rocks coming towards you, find the tiny space between two rocks and try to squeeze between them. You can also try running in the opposite direction to outrun the range. Lastly, depending on your current position, you can also run to either side to avoid the attack.
- Grab Attack: The Furnace Golem will bend down and will do a hand swipe to try and grab you. If it is successful, it will chuck you into its fire basket that rests on top of its head. Once you are in there, it is certain death.
- Counter: The best way to avoid this attack is to stay behind the Golem all the time. Due to its humongous stature, it takes quite a bit to turn around.
- Fire Tornado: This is another one of the ranged attacks. When you are at a distance and especially at a higher level than the ground, it will tilt its head forward and a fire tornado will erupt from the fire basket. The attack has a ridiculous range and will leave you near death even if you are fully healed.
- Counter: The only plan that works against this attack is to get out of the way. The downside of this attack is the prep time the Golem needs to launch this attack. As soon as you see it tilting its head forward, get as far away to the side as possible.
- Fire Canon: The final attack that the Furnace Golem can do is the Fire Canon. It shoots literal fireballs out of its head that go in all directions. This attack only comes when you are at a distance from the Golem.
- Counter: The fireballs are far apart from each other so you can avoid them by running around on your Torrent and avoiding them.
Strategy
Now we know what we are up against, it is time to take it down. The strategy to take a regular Furnace Golem is easy. You just have to break its stance and then attack its face.
Regardless of your build type, get close to its leg for two reasons. First is that you will be safe from all of the ranged attacks. It will not do any ranged attacks if you stay near its feet. The second reason is that the legs are the weakest link, and that’s how you will break its stance.
When you get close to its legs, start attacking it with your weapon of choice, be it a Great Sword, a Katana, or a spell. After a couple of correctly-landed attacks, you will hear a loud noise indicating the stance break.
Continue the attack until the stance has been broken three times. That’s when the Giant Fire Golem will fall to the ground. Run towards its face and do a critical attack for the most damage. You can do almost two critical attacks before it gets back up.
From here, it’s rinse and repeat. Break the stance three times again. Attack its face and the second time will be the last you have to do it.
How to Beat Armored Furnace Golem in Elden Ring DLC
An Armored Furnace Golem won’t go down with the normal strategy. If you get close, you will see that its ankles are protected by a thick armor, and any attack will not go through. Hence, you cannot take it down by normal means.
The moveset for the regular and the armored golem is the same.
Strategy
The only way to defeat an Armored Furnace Golem is to get at a higher altitude than the Golem and chuck Hefty Fire Pots in the fire basket on its head.
Both of these tasks might seem like a mystery to you, but here is how you can do it. Around every Armored Golem should be an unsealed SpiritsSpring. If you don’t know what that is, it’s essentially a hole in the ground that shoots air at a high speed and can lift you up as well.
Find one of those and use it to gain a higher ground. Now comes the question about the Fire Pots. You can craft several types of fire pots: Hefty fire Pots, heft fire pots, or fire pots. These are throwable explosives that explode and cause fire damage upon contact. You can craft (will discuss this in the next section) and carry several of them.
Now that you are fully prepared, here is what you need to do. Once you are at a higher ground, the Armored Furnace Golem will use two of the attacks out of its moveset – Grab Attack and Fire Canon. You can easily dodge both of these.
Every time you have a chance, throw Fire Pots inside its basket, and it should deal with a significant amount of damage, depending upon the type. It will take 3 Hefty Fire Pots, 5 Heft Pots, and around 8-10 Fire Pots to take this demon down.
How to Craft a Hefty Furnace Pot
Although you can use other types of Furnace Pots as well, the Hefty Furnace Pots make things a lot easier. That is why we will look at how you can craft them. You will need the following items to craft a Hefty Furnace Pot:
- Greater Potentiat’s Cookbook (2)
- 1x Furnace Visage
- 2x Ember of Messemer
- 2x Redflesh Mushrooms
You can find the Cookbook in Gravisite Plains. Furnace Visage is dropped by a Furnace Golem, or you can also get it during Hornsent’s Questline. Ember of Messmer is found in Shadow Keep and Scadu Altus. Finally, Redflesh Mushrooms are dropped by Shadow Husk, which you can find all over the Shadow Realm.
Rewards For Defeating Furnace Golems
Every Furnace Golem will drop a different item based on the location they are in. Here is what you will get after defeating every Furnace Golem:
- Furnace Visage (Every Golem)
- Golvewort Crystal Tear (Cerulean Coast)
- Crimsonburst Dried Tear (Shadow Keep)
- Deflecting Hardtear (Scorched Ruins)
- Oil-Soaked Tear (Ruins of Unte)
- Bloodsucking Cracked Tear (Ruins of Unte, Unlit Furnace Golem)
- Cerulean-Sapping Cracked Tear (East of Cathedral mf Manus Metyr(
- Crimson-Sapping Cracked Tear (Rauh Ancient Ruins)
- Viridian Hidden Tear (Ellac River)
This was everything there is known about the Furnace Golem and how you can take them down in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree. While not necessary still taking them down will give you that much-needed satisfaction. Happy Hunting!
