Phasmophobia is all about investigating paranormal activity in a haunted location. But do not expect to whip out your Proton Packs and bust those suckers, you are here to strictly collect evidence and confirm that the place is indeed haunted. There is a plethora of evidence you can log into your evidence diary however, some might seem confusing to a novice investigator.
Amongst these pieces of evidence are fingerprints. On the other hand, you can even collect footprints of certain ghosts as well. But do these footprints count as fingerprint evidence in Phasmophobia?
No, Footprints DO NOT count as fingerprint evidence in Phasmophobia. However, you can take pictures of footprints for bonus rewards like XP and money. Due to this reason, you can not submit footprints as or similar to the fingerprint evidence at the end of the investigation.
Fingerprints
Fingerprints are one of the key pieces of evidence you can collect in Phasmophobia. Once collected, you can log it in your evidence diary at the end to submit your final report. In addition, unique fingerprints also help identify what type of ghost is haunting the location you are investigating.
Fingerprints are left behind by ghosts on certain surfaces only like:
- Most types of doors (except exit doors)
- Light switches (except most lamps without separate switches)
- Windows
- Keyboards
- Cooler boxes
These prints will only be left behind on objects or surfaces that the ghost has interacted with. Depending on the type/size of the surface, either a fingerprint or a whole handprint will appear on the interacted surface. Both of these will count towards fingerprint evidence.
You can view the fingerprints by shining either a UV flashlight or a glowstick on the interacted surface. You can also take pictures of the fingerprint for a photo reward. However, you have to be quick in gathering the evidence as fingerprints will disappear in 2 minutes.
The photo of the fingerprint can reward up to $5 and 5XP, depending on the distance it was taken from. If the picture is taken within 20 seconds of the interaction then the reward will be the highest.

Footprints
Footprints also appear similar to fingerprints but they are not reported as evidence in the journal. And unlike fingerprints, footprints do not randomly appear on interacted surfaces. There has to be a specific condition for them to be visible.
You need to first place a pile of Salt on the ground. If the ghost steps on it then you will start hearing footsteps sounds and if you use a UV light or a glowstick then you can even see footsteps. In comparison to fingerprints, footsteps only last around 10 to 15 seconds.
Footsteps are only useful for tracking a ghost’s movement or taking their picture for a photo reward. Again, footsteps are not considered evidence so use them for their intended purpose.
Some ghost AI is smart enough to stop when they step on salt. In this case, there won’t be any footprints that will appear. Wraiths are the only ghosts that never leave any footprints as they float.
Taking a picture of the footprint can net you at most 5XP and $5, depending on the distance the picture was taken from.
Do Footprints Count As Fingerprints In Phasmophobia?
As we have already mentioned before, footprints don’t count as fingerprint evidence or evidence of any kind. They are primarily for tracking the movement of the ghost and/or photo reward. Fingerprints or handprints are evidence to capture and that should be given more attention.
Sadly, you can not cover the whole location in salt and capture footprints, and turn them in as evidence. You need only fingerprints to do so in Phasmophobia. However, capturing either of these can still bring in XP and monetary reward so we do encourage you to document them.
