The Spirit or Rin Yamaoka is the ninth killer added to Dead by Daylight with Chapter 9: Shattered Bloodline DLC. In this ultimate guide, we will go over everything she has at her disposal and make her unique. We will also cover some tips and tricks to set her up properly and play her the right way.
The Spirit cements herself as one of the top-ranked killers in DBD. She is simple yet utilizing her Phase-Walking ability does require some grinding to get used to. No other killer can match her stealthiness and speed. Tracking survivors while in her invisible state is something to work towards but once you do, she transforms into an apex predator.
Here is a detailed guide that covers everything there is to know about The Spirit in Dead by Daylight to make it easier for you to decide whether to pick her or not.
Is The Spirit (Rin Yamaoka) good for beginners?
The Spirit has a steep learning curve. She is one of the hardest killers from the lot but is still not that complicated. Her Phase-Walking ability seems straightforward but its right use and its many nuances do pose a challenge to master. She doesn’t have a lot of micromanagement for a top-tier killer.
Nonetheless, she is still amongst the best killers in the game. You won’t regret putting in the time and effort that she clearly deserves. She might ruin other killers for you as no one else will meet her unprecedented speed.
Are The Spirit Perks worth upgrading?
None of her default perks are that useful in her case. You should however opt for Sloppy Butcher perk which augments her basic attacks with the Hemorrhage and Mangled Status Effects.
Hex: No One Escapes and Bitter Murmur are great for the end-game pressure and generator regression respectively. Both these perks will come in handy on the off chance the survivors complete all the generators are about to get out of dodge.
What are The Spirit Perks?
The Spirit has 3 unique perks with three tier levels in Dead by Daylight:
Spirit Fury
After breaking 4/3/2 Pallets, this perk triggers:
- The next time you are stunned by a Pallet, The Entity instantly breaks it.
- The normal Stun penalty still applies.
- Spirit Fury deactivates after applying its effect.
Hex: Haunted Ground
Two trapped Hex Totems will spawn in the Trial Grounds.
- When either Totem is cleansed or blessed, all Survivors suffer from the Exposed Status Effect for 40/50/60 seconds.
- The second Hex Totem will immediately turn into a Dull Totem.
Rancor
You become obsessed with one Survivor.
Each time a Generator is completed, the following effects apply:
- Reveals your Aura to the Obsession for 5/4/3 seconds.
- All Survivors’ locations are revealed to you for 3 seconds.
Once the Exit Gates are powered, the following effects apply:
- You are granted the ability to kill the Obsession by your own hand.
- The Obsession suffers from a permanent Exposed Status Effect.
What Weapon does The Spirit have?
The Spirit wields the Shattered Katan as her main weapon. An honorable weapon in the hands of a wretched wench is a killer combination.
What Powers does The Spirit have?
This killer’s power, Yamaoka’s Haunting, is similar to The Wraith. It allows her to phase in and out of the physical world and the Ethereal Plane. Even in her physical state, survivors will have a hard time tracking her as she is phasing randomly.
Her invisible state is referred to as Phase-Walking. By holding the power button, she leaves her material body in the real world and traverses the arena cloaked. You can press the button again to uncloak instantly. The phase-walking lasts for a maximum of 5 seconds at any given time and takes 15 seconds at most to cool down for subsequent use.
While Phase-Walking, she gets a significant speed boost and this boost stays active for a short duration even after she transitions to her physical self. On the flip side, she can not see any survivors while in this state, only their scratch marks are visible and the sounds they make are audible. The survivors will also hear an eerie sound when she is within 24 meters of them.
The Husk she leaves behind in the physical world keeps releasing a Terror Radius. The Husk disappears when she turns visible.
Is The Spirit fun to play?
The Spirit has a short stature, her movement speed is slower, and her Terror Radius is smaller compared to others but her ability pushes everything to the side. She sits on top of the podium, just behind The Nurse, as the finest killer in DBD.
Her speed and stealth while Phase-Walking is downright OP. Survivors will never see her coming even when she is in her physical state. The capacity to transition from visible to invisible on a whim is incredible. She can control the entire arena without much trouble.
With the right amount of training, she is an insanely fun killer to wreak havoc with.
What are some tips and tricks to get better with The Spirit?
Here are some tips that you can employ when playing as The Spirit in Dead by Daylight:
- Shiawase Amulet or any other add-ons that extend the duration of her Phase-Walking is a blessing.
- Add-ons like Zori will further increase her movement speed while phasing makes her even more zippy.
- Yamaoko’s Haunting can be recharged even faster with the Origami Crane add-on, lowering down time between hunting.
- Other than just relying on sounds from the survivors while invisible, look for other queues like Scratch Marks, moving grass, and environmental interactions to track survivors effectively.
- Employ phase-walking not just for chases, utilize it to cover distances especially if you want to stop survivors from completing generators.
- Choosing when to commit to a chase and when to let go is crucial. A skilled survivor can easily dupe the killer while she can not see them so use her power responsibly.
- Turning up the volume of your audio setup will provide valuable information for tracking.
- If you are certain of a survivor’s movement and you know you will reach them, you can instantly lunge out of phase-walking for maximum distance and damage.
- A good strategy for loops is to enter the loop following a survivor, go invisible, and turn around to catch them as they circle around.
- Even with perks like Bitter Murmur that allow her to see Auras, she can not see them while phase-walking. So track them as the perk get activated and keep them in mind when you phase to chase and finish the job.
- Get rid of any powerful pallet as soon as you get the chance for later runs.
- The cooldown after the full use of phase-walking is quite high, so the best practice is to use it in short bursts/duration. Only fully consume the ability when you are confident about the survivor’s location especially when they are walking in a dead zone.
- Experienced survivors will take advantage of perks/add-ons that make them silent. When you are chasing them, if all tracking queues disappear then come out of the phase to check whether they have stopped moving to put you off kilter. Many times they will be sitting ducks for you to grab.
The Spirit phases in and out of existence like it is nothing. Survivors will be scratching their heads trying to spot her and will never know what hit them. This little girl sneaks up and scares the bejesus of any unassuming victim.
