Strategies for Defeating Aldrich, Devourer of Gods

Here are some strategies for defeating Aldrich, Devourer of Gods you can use depending on the build you opted for in Dark Souls 3:

Melee Strategy

Upon entering the boss fog, you’ll want to charge straight at the boss. He may try to cast some little purple balls that hover and then dive at you but try not to focus on these for now and simply close the distance as fast as you can.

When you get up to him, he will try to hit you with a melee attack or two. Roll through it, get behind him, and exhaust your stamina attacking his tail.

He will slam his staff into the ground vanishing and causing an AoE at this point. You’ll want to make sure that AoE doesn’t hit you as it hits quite hard.

Move to the middle of the room at this point. Look around for him to appear and again charge him and repeat this process.

At half health, he will begin phase 2, coming out of the ground and casting fire around him 180 degrees. He usually fires his arrows immediately, so you will have to run away as fast as possible, as long as you can, rolling as needed until the arrow rain is finished.

He will most likely fire Crystal Soul Spears at you near the end, so be sure to keep dodging even after the arrows end until you get your bearings.

Sprint back to the boss, dodging his melee attack and hitting him once again in his tail. You will repeat this process until the boss is dead.

A couple of notes about this fight:

  • His melee attacks are erratic and hard to gauge, hence rolling is recommended over blocking.
  • His arrow attacks in Phase 1 generally head in a straight line and are much shorter than in Phase two so there is no need to run from them here.
  • Usually, the boss will spawn in the opposite corner to the one he just vanished from, so look and head in that direction first after he teleports.
  • Occasionally you will get some bad RNG, and the boss will spam Bow Attacks in phase 2, almost guaranteeing your death. Try not to let that get to you.

Magic Strategy

Magic Strategy

Here are some things that a Magic user will benefit from:

  • Twisted Wall of Light
  • Greater Magic Weapon
  • Vow of Silence
  • Pestilent Mist
  • Greater Soul Arrow
  • Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring
  • Young Dragon Ring
  • Lingering Dragoncrest Ring
  • Sage Ring
  • Blue Bug Pellets – Consumable used for magic damage reduction.

The Twisted Wall of Light will repel most of the boss’s ranged magic attacks, like the purple soul masses and arrow barrage. This doesn’t work on his Soul Spear attack, so beware of that.

Use this spell as and when needed to nullify the damage you are about to receive, and use this time to either use melee attacks or fire your own spells like Greater Soul Arrow.

If you are using the Greater Magic Weapon spell, buff your weapon before entering the boss arena for better damage output. The casting time is higher for this one, so use it at the most optimal time during the fight.

The Vow of Silence miracle is highly effective here. It will cancel all of his magic attacks, even the AOE he sends out while teleporting. The duration of this spell is short, so use it sparingly.

Pestilent Mist traps can be utilized if you are able to lock Aldrich behind the pillars. Cast right before he is about to send out the arrow barrage for maximum damage.

Melee attacks should be performed for more damage during this trap, but that might unstuck the boss. Better yet, use the Greater Soul Arrow.

Pyromancy Strategy

As a Pyromancer, you can use the following setup:

  • Great Chaos Fire Orb
  • Flash Sweat
  • Fire Orb
  • Chaos Bed Vestiges
  • High Magic Resistance Armor

Use Flash Sweat as you enter the boss room to negate any Fire damage from the boss. Beeline towards the boss, thereby averting him from hurling Soul Spears at you. Use Fire Orbs as you get close to him and keep dodging his attacks. Keep this up until you advance to the second phase.

In this phase, utilize the pillars to keep the boss at bay, and when given the opportunity, either use the Great Chaos Fire Orbs or the Chaos Bed Vestiges for massive damage.

If you use the pillars correctly, you will only have to worry about his arrow rain attack. Outrun the arrow rain and continue using this strategy. Soon the boss will go down.
