Ceaseless Discharge is a behemoth of a boss in Dark Souls Remastered that needs to be killed to remove the lava and venture into the lower parts of the Demon Ruins. He is extremely intimidating owing to his stature, but there are many ways to fight him on your terms to level the playing field. Additionally, there is a baked-in cheese that completely removes the challenge of the fight. In this guide, we’ll cover all the ways you could approach the boss face to face, including the cheese.
Fighting Ceaseless Discharge in Dark Souls Remastered
Unlike other bosses in Dark Souls Remastered, you’ll notice that the Ceaseless Discharge boss fight won’t trigger as you move past the fog gate. You will have to first go through the mountain ledge, go over the stairs, and take a right turn through a small cave to witness the humongous boss skulking at the far end of the arena. He’s a towering giant made of lava with many tendrils growing from his back.
He will remain passive until you attack him first or loot the armor on the altar before him.
If you attack him first, the fight will initiate with him attacking you with his back tendrils only. However, if you loot the armor first (or anytime during the fight), he will shriek and rip out his left arm from his chest, gaining access to new attacks.
He uses his many tendrils to pummel you into the ground, and each attack hits like a truck. Most of his attacks are physical based, with a few exceptions that deal both tremendous physical and fire damage.
You can fight him inside the arena, mano a mano, or, if you know what you are doing, use a cheese method to insta-kill the boss if you follow a few specific steps. There is more on this in the cheese section below.
Here are some tips to keep in mind when going up against Ceaseless Discharge in Dark Souls Remastered:
- He is weak to Magic and Lightning damage.
- Fire damage does nothing to the boss; thus, pyromancies are useless against him.
- He is entirely immune to Bleed, Poison, and Toxic.
- You cannot parry his attacks; he can’t be backstabbed or critically struck.
- Fire-resistant armor and rings will come super handy during this boss fight.
- Flash Sweat will reduce the damage from his fire-based attacks.
- You can use the stairs along the ledge of the arena to make this fight easy.
- The cave leading up to the main arena can also bait his attack and take him out comfortably.
- If you die without looting the armor, the boss will return to his passive state when you approach him again.
- If you have looted the armor and died, the boss will remain hostile in subsequent attempts. However, his arm will reset, and you must return to the armor’s location to trigger the arm-releasing animation. (Necessary when going for the cheese).
- Ring of Steel Protection helps tank his slams.
Boss Strategy
The arena design and gameplay mechanics of the Ceaseless Discharge boss fight in Dark Souls Remastered offers various strategies, making it one of the more adaptable challenges in the game.
Staying near Ceaseless Discharge is often the safest route since straying too far triggers his Long-Range Fiery Overhead Slam. This devastating attack is nearly impossible to dodge or block. When you’re up close, his Overhead Slam attacks are your only concern. While they’re difficult to avoid and cannot be blocked, these attacks leave him vulnerable long enough for you to close the gap and deal some damage.
Timing is everything. Proper timing on your rolls is crucial because his attacks have exceptional tracking, making hesitation a death sentence. Watch out for his Double Overhead Slam, where he strikes the same area twice. While you can dodge the first slam, you’ll need quick reflexes to roll away from the second.
If you’re not above using terrain to your advantage, the L-shaped cave near the arena offers a safe spot to cheese this fiery foe. Look for one of his tendrils sticking up above from the cave’s back corner. You can fire arrows at the upper appendage from this position while staying safe from his melee attacks.
Wait for Ceaseless Discharge to walk back toward his original resting position. Use a longbow to zoom in and aim for the upper appendage. Time your shots so they land right on the tendril and slowly chip away at his health. Be patient! This method can take up to 200 arrows to bring him down, so stock up beforehand. This approach requires persistence; if executed correctly, it ensures minimal risk.
Magic users can exploit Ceaseless Discharge’s colossal body and weakness to magic. With properly upgraded Soul Spears, you can target his limb or approach the arena’s edge to hit his main body. However, standing so close to him will likely lead to him one-shotting you with his slams.
Stick to casting once or twice, then retreat for the incoming and repeat the whole thing. If you have the Dark Bead spell, it’s an excellent alternative. The spell dishes out exceptional damage since it’s easy to land all beads.
The staircase in the middle of the arena can turn this fight into a comical affair. Stand atop the stairs and bait Ceaseless Discharge into performing his Overhead Slam attack. As he winds up, move down the stairs to avoid the hit. Once the slam connects and the smoke clears, sprint back up to land a few attacks on his vulnerable limbs. Repeat this process until he’s down for good.
Moveset
Ceaseless Discharge in Dark Souls Remastered has the following attacks and how you should react to them:
| Attack | Description | Reaction |
| Overhead Slam | He rears up and slams his upper tendril straight in front. The attack creates a shockwave near the slam that could hit you even if you dodge the appendage. | Back off or pick a side and run before the tendril land. Go in to attack before he pulls his arm back. It can’t be blocked, so avoid doing that. |
| Double Overhead Slam | It’s the same as before but done twice in rapid succession. | It’s hard to dodge, but again, pick a side and run out of the radius of both the slam. Retaliate after the last slam. |
| Long-Range Fiery Overhead Slam | When you are standing farther away, he will rear up his upper tendril and slam it the same way as before, but this time, it sends out a cone of fire in front. It will send you flying if connected. | When you see this attack coming, run to the side and avoid the fire cone. Wait for the fire to die, and then return to attack. |
| Frenzy | He’ll go berserk and slam his many tendrils randomly on the ground around 6 to 10 times. | It is tough to predict since the slams are random. You need to keep an eye on where they land and dodge accordingly. |
| Tendril Sweep | He’ll use his long appendage to swipe the entire arena. He might chain it twice. | Either back off or dodge into the incoming swipe. |
| Blazing Slam | He pulls back his left arm, lights it up, and slams it in a straight line before him. This has a similar AOE to Overhead Slam and deals massive fire damage. He can chain it twice very quickly. | Pick a side and start running when you see his arm engulfed in flame. Once the attack and shockwave dissipate, run back and attack until he retreats. |
Rewards for Defeating Ceaseless Discharge
Here are all the goodies you’ll receive for beating Ceaseless Discharge in Dark Souls Remastered:
- 20,000 Souls
- 1x Humanity
- 1x Homeward Bone
- You can grab the Gold-Hemmed Black Set off an altar from the far end of the arena, where he is standing initially.
How to Cheese Ceaseless Discharge in Dark Souls Remastered?
The developers have incorporated a cheese into this boss fight, so we don’t have to devise our strategy. If you follow the steps below, you can force the boss to fall into the lava pit and die instantly.
First, you must go to the corner where the boss is skulking and rob the armor off the altar. Don’t attack him first to make him aggro. You must loot to trigger him to release his left arm. If you die, you must return to the armor’s location even if you have already looted it because sometimes the boss resets his arm. Thus, you need to re-trigger the arm-releasing animation.
After his arm is out, turn around and start running towards the fog gate from where you enter the arena. Be careful, as the boss will continue to attack you.
When you reach the gate, ensure you are hugging it so you won’t get hurt from what’s about to happen. In an attempt to hit you, the boss will jump toward you, only for his left arm to get stuck on the ledge while his whole body dangles over the pit below.
At this point, he’s just a sitting duck. Move close to his arm and start attacking it with whatever you have. Within a few hits, the boss will plummet, and his health will vanish in one fell swoop. Let gravity do its thing, and you will reap the cheesy benefits.
Ceaseless Discharge might seem overwhelming at first when encountered in Dark Souls Remastered. However, there are so many ways of taking him out that you’ll laugh at yourself for being afraid initially. From using the arena against him to cutting his life expectancy short using the cheese, you have no shortage of ceasing this discharge once and for all.
