If you are coming from more traditional Souls games, you might be wondering or must have tried to parry in Black Myth Wukong. While the game opts for a lot of the mechanics from the genre it is not exactly what you were hoping for and that also stands for parrying. So how does one parry in Black Myth Wukong?
There is no direct way to parry an attack in Black Myth Wukong but you can use the Rock Solid Spell to get a similar effect.
Let’s dive into the details of how you can utilize this spell to parry an enemy’s attack in Black Myth Wukong.
Parrying in Black Myth Wukong
Since there is no traditional way of parrying an attack in Black Myth Wukong, we need to improvise with what we have. You can still deflect an enemy’s attack by using the Rock Solid Spell.
It is an alternation-type spell that will turn the Destined One into a rock. If done right, the enemy’s attack will be deflected, the enemy will stagger, and you will have a chance to counter the attack. Since it is a spell so, there will be a cooldown, and you will also need mana to activate the spell.
It might take a couple of tries to get the timing right. In an ideal scenario, if you activate the spell exactly at the moment the enemy initiates the attack, you should be able to parry the attack.
Every successful parry will be followed by a yellow spark and a “ching” sound effect. That will be your cue to get ready for a counterattack. The timing will be different for every boss. Sometimes you might have to activate it earlier than you normally do and other times you should delay the activation to perfectly match the timing.
Smaller enemies are easier to parry than most major bosses. Trail and error is how you can achieve perfection in parrying an attack in Black Myth Wukong.
How to Unlock Rock Solid Spell in Black Myth Wukong?
You will receive the Rock Solid Spell as a reward for defeating the Tiger Vanguard in Chapter 2 of the game.
You can find him at the Crouching Tiger Temple. You will reach this point after defeating a series of bosses: Lang-Li-Guhh-Baw, The King of the Flowing Sands, and The Second Prince of Flowing Sands. Since this is the final boss for this chapter, you should prepare accordingly.
The attacks from the Tiger Vanguard are brutal and swift. This will also be the first time you will see the Rock Solid Spell in action. The boss can use it freely and if you are a victim of this parry mechanism, there will be serious consequences.
The best plan of action is to stay at a distance for as long as you can and only go forward if you see a clear opening. Eventually, the boss will go down and you will receive the Rock Solid Spell.
How to use the Rock Solid Spell?
Once you have the skill unlocked, you can equip it by simply going to the nearest shrine. You should see the option to Set Spell under the Self-Advance tab. Under the Alternation tab, you should see Rock Solid. Once equipped, here is how to use it on different platforms:
PC: Press 2 on the keyboard to activate
PS5: Press R2 + Triangle simultaneously to activate
Xbox Controller: Press RB + Y to activate
Now you know how to use the Rock Solid Spell. All you have to do is to nail the timing and you should have no problem parrying enemies.
Best Skill to Unlock For Rock Solid Spell
With the Rock Solid now unlocked, you should have access to the skill tree for the spell. Here are some handy skills you should unlock to further enhance the effects of the spell:
Skill | Cost | Effect |
---|---|---|
Rapid Return | 1 Spark | Can cancel the spell anytime |
Rock Mastery | 1 Spark | Reduces the cooldown time |
Nick of Time | 1 Spark | Fills up the focus meter after every successful parry |
Ironclad | 1 Spark | Will reduce damage taken for a short time after a successful parry |
Upper Hand | 1 Spark | The light attack does more damage after a successful parry |
Bold Venture | 2 Sparks | Will recover some mana if the parry is successful |
Parrying Using Resolute Counterflow
Using Rock Solid is not the only way to counterattack in Black Myth Wukong. You can also use Resolute Counterflow to get similar results. Not exactly but if executed correctly, it should get the job done.
Resolute Counterflow is one of the earliest staff stances in Black Myth Wukong. You can find it under the Smash Stance Skill tree. What the skill essentially does is that it allows you to pass through the enemy’s attack, negating any damage, and countering with a heavy attack.
This way you can also momentarily stagger the enemy which leaves them open for further counterattacks.
You need focus points to use Resolute Counterflow
To use Resolute Counterflow, you will need to perform a heavy attack while your character is in the animation of a light attack combo. Your staff will give off a red glow and you will not only safely dodge the enemy’s attack but also counter it with a heavy attack.
Since you will be able to use this from the very start of the game, you can use it until you unlock the Rock Solid Spell in Chapter 2.
This was all about the parrying mechanic in Black Myth Wukong. While the game lacks a more traditional style of parrying, the skills and the stances make up for it in the majority of the cases.
