We have brought you some of the best combat tips to help you slay those absurd number of bosses in Black Myth Wukong. Pick up your staff, Sun Wukong, because we are going on an adventure.

1. Learning New Stances Will Hurt (The Enemies)

The Destined One

You aren’t stuck with the same attacks and combos in Black Myth Wukong. There are more than a few variations of combos and heavy attacks that come with three of the available stances: Smash, Pillar, and Thrust. Every stance comes with its own heavy attack and combos though the light attack remains the same.

Unlock and master all three stances as soon as possible. This will give you more flexibility in terms of taking on different types of enemies. Every stance specializes in a particular playstyle for example smash stances are better for a more offensive approach but within close range.

Pillar Stance gives you more range while encouraging you to be on the defensive size. Similarly, Thrust stances have more hard-hitting heavy attacks but come with the cost of longer charge time.

Master all three stances and switch according to the need of the battle. This will improve your combat abilities by a lot.

2. Learn to Evade

The Destined One

In any combat, learning to dodge enemy attacks is half the battle. A well-timed dodge saves you from taking unnecessary damage and allows you to take a few steps back to strategically plan your next move. In Black Myth Wukong, there is no direct way to block or parry an attack so you will mostly be relying on evading or dodging the attack.

The best way to approach a difficult boss is to first learn the attack patterns. Once you learn how to dodge most of the boss’s attacks then you can go ahead and play on the offense because now you know how to deal with every attack that comes toward you.

Different stances also let you do different types of dodges. For instance, in Pillar Stance, you can extend your staff and climb to the top. Not only, you will be safe from taking any damage, but you will also be able to heal yourself while at the top though you will need the Skylarking Skill for that.

Make sure to not stay there for a long time because any time an enemy attacks the staff, your stamina goes down.

3. Focus on Your Focus Points

The Destined One

If you look at the bottom right of your screen, you can see the Focus meter and your focus points. These are essentially credits that you can charge and then later use to perform special heavy attacks that deal significantly more damage than a regular heavy attack.

When you start playing, you will only be able to charge up to a maximum of one focus point but you can invest sparks to increase that number up to a max of four. Focus meter charges when you land an attack, do a perfect dodge or stand to charge them with your staff.

Focus-charged heavy attacks also let you break an enemy’s stance or stagger them, leaving them vulnerable to more attacks. There are also stance-specific attacks that can utilize focus points.

Make sure to invest in focus points early on as they will make fight significantly easier. Focus points also have a lifespan so if you don’t utilize them for a long time, they will expire. Always have one in reserve but not for long.

4. Dodging is the Secret Way to Recover

The Destined One in Combat

Not many people know this but if you press your dodge button when you get hit by an attack and lose your balance, you will recover much faster as compared to your character automatically recovering.

Some heavy attack from enemies will throw you off balance and you won’t be able to hit back until you recover. Now you can either choose to recover automatically or you can press dodge to recover almost instantly.

You do have to time it perfectly otherwise it will not work. Might take a couple of tries but once you get the hang of it, this is going to be one of the most useful techniques to use against all types of enemies.

5. Keep Your Health Topped Up

Drinks Menu

This is a general rule for every combat game you should heal yourself when you can and not when you have to. Taking damage during combat in games like Black Myth Wukong is almost inevitable and that is why healing items exist which in this case is your Gourd.

You can craft medicines and heal very early on in Wukong and as you progress further into the game, the medicine you can craft becomes better and more potent. You can also add additional items to your Gourd to give you buffs on top of recovered health.

Materials to craft medicine are quite common so make sure you pick them every time you come across them. Again, heal when you can and not when you have to because sometimes that tiny bit of health can be the deciding factor in the battle.

6. Spinning The Staff Is More Than Just a Party Trick

Staff Skill Tree

If you have discovered spinning your staff so you should know that it is not a gimmick and there is actual use for it. You can press V (PC), L2 (PS5), and LT (Xbox) to spin your staff in Black Myth Wukong. If you spin your staff and point it directly towards projectiles, you can actually deflect them.

This includes arrows and the majority of the smaller projectile attacks from enemies. You can also spin your staff to charge your focus meter however you should be mindful that it drains your stamina very quickly. There are also skills such as Mobile Spin that let you spin your staff even while moving.

7. Managing Mana is Rewarding

Spell Menu in Keeper's Shrine

Mana is the resource that you use to cast different spells in Black Myth Wukong and it is also the only resource that doesn’t recharge with consumables. You can only fill your Mana meter by resting at a Keeper’s Shrine.

That is why you should also preserve your Mana and use it only when necessary. Unnecessarily casting spells will only leave you high and dry when you actually need them. On the other hand, if you manage your Mana properly, you will be able to chew through bosses with a combination of spells and physical attacks.

8. Stamina is Money

Meditation Spot

Stamina is arguably the most valuable resource in your arsenal. You can dodge an attack if your health is low. You can use physical attacks if you are out of Mana but you can’t do either of those things if you are running low on stamina.

Stamina doesn’t recover reasonably fast in Black Myth Wukong but it is not instant. There will be times when you have to dodge an attack but if you are out of stamina, you are as good as dead. Learn to manage your stamina early on in the game so you are never out of stamina.

To do that, you can avoid spamming the dodge button or sprinting aimlessly. Move when you have to and count your dodges. This is a simple yet effective trick to manage your stamina.

9. Learn to Parry

Rock Solid Spell

Technically, there is no parry mechanic in Black Myth Wukong but that doesn’t mean you can do it indirectly. You can parry an enemy’s attack and also stagger them while doing so by using the Rock Solid Spell.

This is a spell that you can unlock in Chapter Two by defeating the Tiger Vanguard. What the spell does is turn your body into rock momentarily. When the enemy’s attack hits your rock-solid body, it will not only deflect but there is a chance that the enemy’s stance might also be broken.

10. Make Full Use of Your Kit

The Destined One

It is easy to get overwhelmed while starting a new game such as Black Myth where you have the option to use more than just physical attacks in a battle. You have all these consumables, spells, stances, and buffs that will help you in a battle.

Once you learn how to use each one properly, you will notice that each of these items works in tandem with each other. Combine spells such as CloudStep with heavy attacks to not only dodge an attack perfectly but also hit back even harder.

Mix and match gourds and drinks to increase potency and add temporary buffs. Unlock new spells and invest sparks into skill trees. Basically, use everything at your disposal if you want to experience and get good at Black Myth Wukong.

Lastly, just know that there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to combat in games. It all comes down to personal preference and overall playstyle. Just be mindful of the little things and practice. Just remember the most important part. Always have fun.
