Fighting Flamelurker

Flamelurker standing

You will find the Flamelurker in the depths of Armor Spider Archstone in The Tunnel City. If you thought getting here was a hassle, you haven’t seen the half of it.

As the name Flamelurker suggests, it is a fire-based boss. Physical damage is not the only thing you need to be worried about, but rather, fire damage is what your main concern should be.

The movements of Flamelurker resemble that of a rouge gorilla. Its movements are agile and every attack hits like a truck. It is going to jump around a lot and will surely keep you on your feet.

The arena is the only good thing about this fight. You have tons of space to move around and the pillars present there can be used for cover from time to time.

Here are a couple more things you should keep in mind before you find yourself face-to-face with this beast:

  • Flamelurker is weak against magic so attacks like Soul Arrow or Soul Ray will make things that much easier.
  • Flame Resistance Ring, Purple Flame Shield, and Burrower Armor, all can be found before the fight, are recommended equipment regardless of the build you are running.
  • If you are using a melee weapon you can use Sticky White Stuff to boost your damage.
  • There is an increase in aggression once its health drops below a certain point.

Moveset

Flamelurker’s moveset is not particularly extensive but every attack is fatal. You need to be mindful of your stats if you are thinking about blocking any of them. With that said here is what you are going to be dealing with:

  • Fire Blast: It will smash one of his hands on the ground, trying to crush you.
    • Reaction: Roll to either side and counter with an attack.
  • Hand Swipe: A generic swipe attack in the horizontal direction.
    • Reaction: Can be blocked or dodged with a roll.
  • Pounce: Sudden dash in your direction followed by a smash attack.
    • Reaction: Wait for it to come close and roll forward to avoid the attack.
  • Fire Smash: Flamelurker will raise both of its hands in the air and smash them on the ground to do an AoE attack.
    • Reaction: The build-up to the attack gives you enough window to back up and maintain distance.

Strategy

The fight against the Flamelurker is mostly going to consist of healing yourself and avoiding the aggression. It is better to have enough heals if you want to get it over with in one try.

If you are using old-fashioned melee weapons try to maintain distance from time to time because you do get damaged passively just from staying close to it. A lot of the attacks come in succession to one another so always expect an instant follow-up to every attack.

Since it is fast, backstabs are not the best way to go about it. If you want to come out on top, you need to be persistent with your attacks and keep facing the Flamelurker at all times.

If you look closely, after every combo, there is a small delay before the boss gets aggressive again. That’s your chance to deal as much damage as you can.

Wait for the combo to pass, attack, and run away. That’s your formula for success.

If you bring magic attacks to the fight, you do have the upper hand of not ever closing the gap between you and the boss. You will be safe from fire damage and also use the pillars as covers.

It is best to take your time rather than try to end it quickly and die often. You will eventually take it down.

How to Cheese Flamelurker in Demon’s Souls

There is a simpler way to take down the Flamelurker and it involves using the Poison Cloud magic spell and a bit of preparation. There is a pillar (marked as 1) right next to the stairs at the center of the arena.

Arrows marking pillar and top of stairs

As soon as the fight starts, run behind the pillar and stay there until the boss comes from the right side. Once both of you are behind the pillar, run out into the main area from the left and up the stairs into the right corner (marked as 2).

What that will do is trap the boss in the small area between the stairs and the pillar. You can go as far as the top stair and use Poison Cloud to slowly bring its health down and eventually kill it.

Make sure you don’t go too far because then the Flamelurker will be able to get out of that corner and you will have to do everything once again.
