Elder Scrolls Online Which Alliance, Faction, And Race To Pick

Elder Scrolls Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that has been running strong for a while now, and considering the amount of additional expansive content it has gotten over the past, there is just too much stuff to go through, especially for new and out-of-touch players. This particular problem might arise for you from the very start when you are creating a character and are given a choice to pick your Alliance and Race.

Considering you can choose the Race once and are stuck with it for the entire playthrough makes this decision even harder. All The Alliance/Faction In Elder Scrolls Online

Factions/Alliance determine your character’s allegiance and starting area in Elder Scrolls Online. Depending on your choice, you will select a Race for your character and set forth within a specific zone. You will be able to explore and complete quests across all factions regardless of your initial choice, but your PvP allegiance will never change.

There are three Alliance/Faction in ESO:

Daggerfall Covenant

The Daggerfall Covenant is formed by the three races of northwest Tamriel, united by High King Emeric to fulfill a common goal and take back the Ruby Throne. The Bretons have the gifts of magic and diplomacy. The Orcs are stalwart soldiers and talented armorers who manufacture the finest weapons and armor in all of Tamriel.

The Redguards are supremely athletic and raised to be outstanding warriors from the moment they’re born. The Daggerfall Covenant’s varied talents make it a force to be reckoned with.

  • Leader: High King Emeric
  • PvE Capital: Wayrest in Stormhaven
  • PvP Port: Southern High Rock Gate
  • Starting Area: Stros M’kai

Races of Daggerfall Covenant:

  • Breton
  • Redguard
  • Orsimer (Orc)

Ebonheart Pact

The Ebonheart Pact is the most unlikely of the three alliances. The Nords and Dark Elves have a long history of conflict, and the Argonians were enslaved by the Dark Elves for thousands of years. It was the Akaviri invasion that forged a bond between them. Now they are determined to control their own destiny by defeating the Empire, while preserving their own fiercely independent homelands.

The Nords are the brash, boisterous front line of the Pact; fierce warriors and expert weapon masters. The Dark Elves have a natural affinity for magic. The Argonians are the best guerilla warriors in Tamriel. The combined strength of these unlikely allies makes the Ebonheart Pact a fighting force of extraordinary power.

  • Leader: Jorunn
  • PvE Capital: Mournhold in Deshaan
  • PvP Port: Southern Morrowind Gate
  • Starting Area: Bleakrock Isle

Races of Ebonheart Pact:

  • Nord
  • Dunmer (Dark Elf)
  • Argonian

Aldmeri Dominion

The Dominion was formed in an attempt to take control of the Imperial City and restore Elven rule to Tamriel. It is said that the three allied races were the most intelligent, patient and rational in Tamriel. Members of the Aldmeri Dominion believe that the short-lived and young races of men are unfit to rule, and that this role is meant by the Divines to be filled by the Aldmeri Dominion itself.

The Aldmeri Dominion has adopted as its symbol the eagle sigil of the High Elves of Summerset. For the Altmer, the high-soaring eagle represents their ancestors the Aedra, who came from the heavens and were trapped in physical form by the creation of Nirn.

  • Leader: Queen Ayrenn
  • PvE Capital: Elden Root in Grahtwood
  • PvP Port: Eastern Elsweyr Gate
  • Starting Area: Khenarthi’s Roost

Races of Aldmeri Dominion:

  • Altmer
  • Bosmer
  • Khajiit

Races In Elder Scrolls Online

On top of the Faction choice, your Race will determine bonuses/passives your character will have access to throughout the game. They are unique to each Race and some cater more to certain playstyles than others, so choose carefully as this can’t be undone without paying extra.

There are 3 Races in each Faction/Alliance and one independent Race that can join any Alliance you choose. Below we will be listing all the Races with their specific passives and bonuses:

Breton – Daggerfall Covenant

Bretons have a heavy focus on Magicka and thus make very good Magicka-based DPS or Healers. The cost reduction of Magicka abilities, in combination with the Magicka Recovery gives them excellent sustain, allowing them to DPS or Heal longer before needing to use a Potion or Heavy Attack to regain Magicka.

The Spell Resistance is also nice to have, as it helps keep them alive longer, particularly in PvP. If you know you want to play a Magicka Build, this Race is a fantastic choice.

Nord – Ebonheart Pact

Nords are very tough to kill and should be considered by those that wish to Tank as their primary role, or for those that wish to PvP, as extra Physical and Spell Resistance goes a long way in both of these cases.

The Dark Elves are an interesting Race because they are equally good at Stamina and Magicka roles, making them a great choice for those that are not certain just how they wish to play their character.

In addition, they are ideal for those wishing to take the Vampirism Skill Line, as the extra Flame Resistance will help to offset some of their weakness to Fire-based attacks. Consider taking this Race if you can’t decide between Stamina or Magicka, or you know you want to be a Vampire.

Altmer (High Elf) – Aldmeri Dominion

Just looking at their Racial Passives, you can see that High Elves are more tuned towards the Magicka side of things, rather than Stamina. This means it is ideal to use them as either Magicka DPS or Healers because they both take advantage of the Spell Damage and Max Magicka increase.

These types of Builds use Staffs and are akin to “Mages” in other games, so if you wish to make a mage-like character, High Elf is a good choice.

Altmer (High Elf) Racial Skills

Highborn

Increases experience gain with the Destruction Staff Skill line by 15%.

Increases your experience gained by 1%.

Spell Recharge

Rank III – Unlocked at Altmer (High Elf) 50 – Increases your Spell Damage by 258

Bosmer (Wood Elf) – Aldmeri Dominion

Looking over the Passives you can see that Wood Elves are more inclined to be Stamina-based characters and ones that incorporate some amount of Stealth into their gameplay. This means they will use some combination of martial weapons like Bows, Swords, and Daggers.

Stealth is not particularly useful for PvE content outside of questing but is useful in PvP. And though Max Stamina is good for Tanking, Stamina Recovery is not because Stamina Recovery ceases while Blocking, which Tanks do constantly. These bonuses place Wood Elves squarely into the Stamina DPS category, without much flexibility, if you’re looking to optimize.

Bosmer (Wood Elf) Racial Skills

Acrobat

Increases experience gain with the Bow Skill line by 15%

Khajiit – Aldmeri Dominion

The Khajiit Racial Passives are a bit of a mixed bag and facilitate any kind of play, though perhaps not quite as good as some other Races. Being harder to detect when Sneaking, and increased chance of Pickpocketing marks the Khajit as a Stealthier character. This helps with some questing, stealing, and PvP.

Consider selecting the Nightblade Class when choosing Khajit if you plan to PvP, the reduced detection range makes them much harder to find. Khajits also benefit from higher Critical Strike Chance because of their Crit Damage and Crit Healing bonus, so be sure to use gear that has this Stat.

Khajiit Racial Skills

Imperial – Independent Race

Imperials make ideal tanks, not only because of their bonuses to Health and Stamina but because they regain all 3 resources when they deal damage and have cost reduction for all abilities.

Tanks use both Stamina and Magicka quite regularly, and regaining them helps out. Health is just a bonus. These same qualities make them a decent choice for PvP as well, though not as good as some other Races.
