Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim came out a decade ago but a lot of newcomers have recently been enjoying this gigantic game and exploring the vast open world, uncovering its mysteries, and collecting epic loot. While collecting loot and items in Skyrim, you might feel the need to increase carry weight space to hold more items.
There are several ways to increase your Carry Weight in Skyrim such as leveling up your Stamina, visiting the Steed Stone, using enchantments, unlocking different perks, using commands if you are on PC, and traveling with companions.
This guide will take a detailed look at all of these methods so that you can find all of the required info on increasing your Carry Weight in one place and be on your way as quickly as possible.
Best Ways to Increase Carry Weight in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
We’ve gone through each method available in Skyrim to increase your Carry Weight to the max (900 points) and judge which one is best for you based on your convenience and playstyle. Some methods are rather straightforward while others require you to gather some equipment for stuff like enchantments. Let’s dig through all of them!
Level Up Stamina
Skyrim lets you increase your Carry Weight capacity by leveling up your Stamina stat to the maximum. You can also sprint for longer distances and wear heavy armor and not get tired too quickly if your Stamina is maxed out.
This is a good way to increase your Carry Weight as you progress through the campaign and unlock other stuff. Each Level Up will increase your Carry Weight points by 5.
Visit The Steed Stone
Another surefire way to increase your carry weight in Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is by visiting The Steed Stone, which is just north of the Statue of Meridia. You can easily get to the Statue of Meridia by traveling to Solitude and then exiting the main gate to continue along the path.
Once you reach the statue, turn right and hike upwards until you reach The Steed Stone’s location (marked on the map image below). You might have to billy goat up some mountains here so be careful!
Once you reach the location, walk over to it and receive its blessing. This allows you to add 100 extra units to the total weight you can carry and it also reduces the percentage of how much your armor will slow you down.
Equip Specific Armor Pieces & Equipment
Skyrim is filled with a variety of Heavy & Light armor styles for the players to acquire and use. Some of these armors increase the Carry Weight points of your character, making them very useful.
Here is a list of all the armor pieces and the Carry Weight points they grant:
- Guilds Master Armor – 50 Points
- Thieves Guild Armor – 50 Points
- Deathbrand Armor – 40 Points
- Locket of Saint Juin – 50 Points
- Blackguard’s Armor – 50 Points
Unlock Specific Perks
You can also unlock armor-based perks in Skyrim to negate their weight and increase your Carry Weight even further. If you are using Heavy Armor, unlock the Conditioning perk which makes it weigh nothing & prevents it from causing you any fatigue.
If you are wearing Light Armor, you can unlock the Unhindered perk which makes it weigh nothing & prevents it from causing you any fatigue.
Under the Pickpocket perks, you can unlock the Extra Pockets perk to increase your Carry Weight capacity by another 100 points. You can visit the Skyrim Wiki to check out all of the available perks and their point requirements.
If you are tired of all these methods that give minor buffs to your carry weight, you can simply enchant any of your gear or item with a Potion of Fortify Enchanting at any Arcane Enchanter, and based on how strong your potion was, your carry weight will increase in Skyrim (there is no real limit to how much you can increase your carry weight via this method).
To do that, you need to have the following items:
- Potion of Fortify Enchanting
- A Silver Ring
- Any Soul Gem (Grand / Black Soul Gem preferred)
Start off by consuming your potion once you are near the Arcane Enchanter and then go to the Item tab and select your Silver Ring. Then navigate to the Enchantment tab and scroll down till your find the Fortify Carry Weight option. Your carry weight should now be increased whenever you equip this enchanted ring based on how effective your potion was.

Travel with a Companion
You can travel with any companion like Lydia and have them carry items for you. This is another incredibly easy way to increase Carry Weight in Skyrim as every NPC companion has 300 units worth of space in their inventory.
This method lets you travel with a companion (a spouse or follower) who can assist you in battle and hold any extra items for you. We think this is one of the better and more “authentic” ways to increase your Carry Weight in Skyrim and get an adventurous feel out of it as well. Your very own butler!
Use Console Commands
Tired of all the legit ways? Maybe you just want to have some fun? We got you covered on that front as well.
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim also lets you tinker with commands to enable “cheats” in the game. You can press the ( ” ) key on your keyboard to enable the console and then type the “player.setav CarryWeight #” command to increase your Carry Weight. Replace the “#” in the command with whatever Carry Weight you want to have.
There are many ways you can use to increase your Carry Weight in Skyrim and some of them like visiting The Steed Stone or traveling with a companion is more fun to do than stuff like maxing out stats and brewing enchantments.
Skyrim is an insanely flexible game that allows you to play and do things however you see fit. We hope you find your preferred way to increase your Carry Weight after reading our detailed guide.
