Can You Craft Ammo in Starfield?

Can You Craft Ammo in Starfield?

Crafting is a big part of Starfield. You can craft better weapons, spacesuits, medicines, and other crafting items for building outposts, etc. But can you craft ammo in Starfield? With so many weapons in the game and the constant firefights you’ll be getting into, can you make ammo to keep your guns topped up? Let’s get to the bottom of it.

Unfortunately, in Starfield you CANNOT craft ammo for your weapons. As of right now, you can only get ammo by purchasing from merchants or grabbing off from dead enemies. There is a mod that adds this feature to the game.

This detailed guide tries to explain the logic behind Bethesda’s choice of not letting players craft ammo in Starfield and how it affects gameplay.

Crafting in Starfield

Crafting station

Starfield is filled to the brim with all types of resources used in a number of ways. With the inclusion of crafting, you start relying on your own skill of making stuff instead of spending precious Credits at the vendor to stock up on useful items.

You can craft items at the various types of workbenches. The different types of crafting and workbenches available in the game are:

  • Weapon Workbench: Used to modify weapon parts etc.
  • Industrial Workbench: Used to craft components like building material for outposts etc.
  • Spacesuit Workbench: Used to make adjustments and modifications to your spacesuits.
  • Cooking Station: Used to make food.
  • Pharmaceutical Lab: Used to craft different antidotes, healing items, and buffing consumables.

One would assume, with so many resources at your disposal and a Weapon crafting table, they could easily stockpile ammo for their weapons without the need to visit shops. Sadly, you assumed wrong!

Ammo Crafting in Starfield

Weapon Workbench

Going straight to the topic in question, you can’t craft ammo in Starfield. I don’t know if it’s due to an oversight on Bethesda’s behalf or if they did that intentionally, but ammo is not craftable.

Bethesda’s exclusion of this crucial system has left many dumbfounded especially since it is present in their other games like Fallout 4.

There are Weapon Workbenches already present in the game, but they are mainly for weapon mods, no ammo crafting.

Bethesda could have effortlessly added this aspect to these workbenches, and it wouldn’t feel out of place, especially since most of the resources you accumulate in the game can be used to craft ammo.

For now, all you can do is get the ammo either through the merchants or pick it up from dead enemies.

crafting ammo mod

However, if you are willing to tinker with your game with mods then there is a way of adding this much-requested system. There is a mod over at Nexus Mod called Craftable Ammo and Utilities which allows you to do just that.

Just be aware, that modding your game may result in game file corruption and/or disabling achievements. The mod itself is trusted, but you never know.

At the rate you consume ammo in Starfield, Bethesda should have just included an ammo crafting system out of the gate. There is no sound reasoning behind this omission, and we can only hope they listen to our feedback and add it later on. I guess modding is the only solution to this problem.
