Complete Guide to Covenants in Dark Souls 3

If you have ever played a Dark Souls game, you will have noticed that there are Covenants that you can join in all the games. They don’t force you to join them; they give you another option to have access to other parts of the game. They are helpful if you want something else to do in the game.

There are a total of 9 Covenants that you can join in Dark Souls 3. We will review them all, what they reward you with, and how to join them. Most are easy to join, and you aren’t locked into one. You can leave one and join another by equipping a different item.

Some of the Covenants are for PVE, and some might be for PVP. Finding the one you like is difficult, but you can stick with it for the rest of the game once you find it. You could even try to level up all of them to get the rewards from each one. It is totally up to you how you want to play the game.

What is a Covenant?

As we said before, a Covenant is a group you can join. Each one does something different, although a couple is very close to each other. There is 9 total in Dark Souls 3, and we recommend you try a couple out before deciding which one you like. The picture above shows all the logos for the Covenants.

The top row is the basic logo, and the bottom 3 rows are the different variations of the logos when you have something activated within the game. The Covenant icon is next to your health bar and looks different depending on whether you are Hollowed or Embed. It doesn’t matter which one you join, as long as you know what each one does.

1. Warriors of Sunlight

How to join: The emblem to join the covenant can be found in the Undead Settlement, inside the leftmost house from the big open area with several peasants and an Evangelist praying at a burning tree. The covenant item is on a table along a wall opposite a fireplace with a cauldron of Estus Soup.

This is a PVP Covenant that has you invading other people’s worlds, and it is up to you to defeat them. Once you defeat the Host of the other world, you will be sent back to your world and rewarded with a Sunlight Medal.

You must do this 30 times to get all the equipment from the Covenant itself. It isn’t a good Covenant for new players to the series.

Covenant Reward: Sunlight Medal – 30 of these will get you the Sacred Oath Miracle and the Great Lightning Spear

2. Way of Blue

How to join: Given by Emma, High Priestess of Lothric Castle at the end of the High Wall of Lothric, along with the Small Lothric Banner.

This is a PVP Covenant, but not in the way you think. If you have the item equipped, you will feel secure. Whenever you get invaded by a random person, another person in the Blue Sentinels will be summoned to your world to help you fight the invader. It makes for an amazing Covenant for new players that need help throughout their playthrough.

Covenant Reward: No reward

3. Blue Sentinels

How to join: The covenant item is received by talking to Horace the Hushed at the Halfway Fortress bonfire in the Road of Sacrifices or Firelink Shrine after defeating the Deacons of the Deep. He will also drop the item if he is killed.

This goes hand-in-hand with the Way of Blue since it is the way to help them out. If you have this Covenant equipped, you will be summoned into the world of a random person in the Way of Blue to help them defeat their invader. This is the only way to get the rewards since the Way of Blue doesn’t gain anything from being a part of it.

Covenant Reward: Proof of a Concord Kept – 30 of these will get you the Darkmoon Ring and the Darkmoon Blade Miracle

4. Blades of the Darkmoon

How to join: Obtained from Company Captain Yorshka upon talking to her and performing the “Darkmoon Loyalty” gesture at the Prison Tower in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. To do this, you must obtain the “Darkmoon Loyalty” Gesture from Sirris of the Sunless Realm.

This is exactly like the Blue Sentinels. If you have this Covenant equipped, you will be summoned into the world of a person that has the Way of Blue equipped.

You will earn the same rewards from this Covenant and the Blue Sentinels, so it is up to you to determine which one you want to be a part of. It doesn’t make a difference either way, so keep that in mind.

Covenant Reward: Proof of a Concord Kept – 30 of these will get you the Darkmoon Ring and the Darkmoon Blade Miracle

5. Rosaria’s Fingers

How to join: Talk to Saint Rosaria in the Cathedral of the Deep. Finding her room can be confusing, but a Bonfire is in front of her, so you only need to find this room once.

This is a PVP Covenant that allows you to invade the worlds of random people. It is up to you to defeat them. Once you defeat them, you will gain a Pale Tongue.

Related:

These items will allow you to deepen your allegiance with the Covenant, or they will let you reallocate your stats with Rosaria in her bed-chamber. It is probably the best way to get Pale Tongues.

Covenant Reward: Pale Tongue – 30 of these will get you the Obscuring Ring and the Man-Grub’s Staff

6. Mound-Makers

How to join: To join the covenant as early as possible, the player must not have fought the Curse-rotted Greatwood before joining. The Greatwood may be defeated at no penalty once the covenant is joined. You will need to get in the cage of the non-hostile Hollow Manservant carrying the empty cage on his back in the Undead Settlement.

This is a PVP Covenant that has you invading other people’s worlds. The difference between this one and the other Covenants, you don’t necessarily have to defeat the Host of Embers.

All you have to do is defeat a certain number of phantoms in the world. You will then be rewarded with Vertebra Shackles, which can then be used to deepen your allegiance with the Covenant.

Covenant Reward: Vertebra Shackle – 30 will get you the Bloodlust Katana and the Warmth Pyromancy.

7. Watchdogs of Farron

How to join: The player must find a ladder surrounded by Rotten Slugs within the swamp of Farron Keep. Head up the ladder to find a large non-hostile wolf lying near a bonfire. Speak with the wolf to join the covenant.

This is a PVP Covenant, but it is different from the others. The whole point of the Covenant is to protect Farron Keep. Once an Embered player passes the Halfway Fortress Bonfire, you will be sent to their world to stop them from entering the area.

It is your job to defeat them for the Wolf of Farron. You will then be rewarded with a Wolf’s Blood Swordgrass if successful.

Covenant Reward: Wolf’s Blood Swordgrass – 30 will get you the Old Wolf Curved Sword, the Wolf Knight’s Greatshield, and the Wolf Ring.

8. Aldrich Faithful

How to join: From the Pontiff Sulyvahn bonfire, proceed onward and make your way to the other side of the large courtyard. Upon entering the main building on the opposite side, hit the wall on the left to reveal an illusory wall. Climb down the large ladder to reach a big, flooded hall. In one corner of the room lie the remains of Archdeacon McDonnell. Interacting with him allows access to the covenant.

This is a Covenant very similar to the Watchdogs Covenant, but the only difference is that it is another area you must defend.

Related:

If you are part of the Aldrich Covenant, it is your job to protect the courtyard from the Pontiff Bonfire to the Anor Londo Bonfire. If anyone Embered enters this area, you will be summoned to help defeat them.

Covenant Reward: Human Dregs – 30 of these will get you the Great Deep Soul Sorcery and the Archdeacon’s Great Staff.

9. Spears of the Church (The Ringed City DLC)

How to join: The player must have defeated Darkeater Midir and acquired the Spears of the Church covenant item. To join the covenant, you must equip the Spears of the Church covenant item.

This is the unique Covenant in the game. It is a PVP Covenant, but it is the only Covenant that doesn’t require the person to be Embered to summon you.

If you are a part of this Covenant, you will be summoned for a 1v1 with a person going into the Judicator Argo boss fight. You will have to defeat them to get rewarded, so make sure you are ready for some difficult fights ahead of you.

Covenant Reward: Filanore’s Spear Ornament – 30 of these will get you Young Grass Dew and the Divine Spear Fragment
