Complete Guide to Covenants in Dark Souls 3

Complete Guide to Covenants in Dark Souls 3

If you have ever played a Dark Souls game, you will have noticed that there are Covenants that you can join in all the games. They don’t force you to join them, they just give you another option to have access to other parts of the game. They are actually super helpful if you are looking for something else to do in the game.

There are a total of 9 Covenants that you can join in Dark Souls 3. We will go over all of them, what they reward you with, and how to join them. Most are super easy to join and you aren’t locked into a single one. You can actually leave one and join another by pretty much equipping a different item.

Some of the Covenants are for PVE and some might be for PVP. Finding the one you really like is difficult, but once you find it, you can stick with it for the rest of the game. You could even try to level up all of them to get the rewards from each one. It is totally up to you how you want to play the game.

What is a Covenant?

As we said before, a Covenant is a group that you can join. Each one does something different, although there are a couple that is very close to each other. There is 9 total in Dark Souls 3 and we would recommend that you try a couple out before deciding which one you like. The picture above shows all the logos for the Covenants.

The top row is the basic logo, and the bottom 3 rows are the different variations of the logos when you have something activated within the game. The Covenant icon shows up right next to your health bar and looks different depending on if you are Hollowed or Embered. It doesn’t really matter which one you join, as long as you know what each one does.

What are the Covenants in Dark Souls 3?

Covenants are groups that you can join. Each time you do something for the Covenant, you get an item. If you get 10 of the Covenant items and give them to the respective leader, then you will receive an equipment item. You will get another equipment item when you reach 30 of the Covenant items.

It is a bit confusing, but you basically need to complete the mission of whatever Covenant you are in and you will be rewarded, simple as that. Each one has a different objective to complete, so read about each one and determine which Covenant best suits your playstyle.

Here are the 9 Covenants that you can join in Dark Souls 3 and how to join them:

Warriors of Sunlight

Warriors of Sunlight are brilliantly beaming co-operators who place their golden signatures to help those in need, for it is their duty to deliver a great conquest to their summoner.

How to join: The emblem to join the covenant can be found in the Undead Settlement, inside the leftmost house from the big open area with several peasants and an Evangelist praying at a burning tree. The covenant item is on a table along a wall opposite a fireplace with a cauldron of Estus Soup.

This is a PVP Covenant that has you invading other people’s worlds and it is up to you to defeat them. Once you defeat the Host of the other world, you will be sent back to your world and rewarded with a Sunlight Medal. You will need to do this 30 times in order to get all the equipment from the Covenant itself. It isn’t a good Covenant for new players to the series.

Covenant Reward: Sunlight Medal – 30 of these will get you the Sacred Oath Miracle and the Great Lightning Spear

Way of Blue

Members of the Way of Blue are the beneficiaries of an ancient accord. When a dark spirit threatens them, a blue spirit will grant them assistance, and help root out the invader.

How to join: Given by Emma, High Priestess of Lothric Castle at the end of the High Wall of Lothric, along with the Small Lothric Banner.

This is a PVP Covenant, but not in the way you think. If you have the item equipped, you will have a sense of security. Whenever you get invaded by a random person, another person that is a part of the Blue Sentinels will be summoned to your world to help you fight the invader. It makes for an amazing Covenant for new players that need help throughout their playthrough.

Covenant Reward: No reward

Blue Sentinels

When a member of the way of Blue is threatened by a dark spirit, the Blue Sentinels, in compliance with an ancient accord, assume the form of blue spirits, and help to root out the invader.

How to join: The covenant item is received by talking to Horace the Hushed at the Halfway Fortress bonfire in the Road of Sacrifices, or at Firelink Shrine after defeating the Deacons of the Deep. He will also drop the item if he is killed.

This goes hand-in-hand with the Way of Blue since it is the way to help them out. If you have this Covenant equipped, you will be summoned into the world of a random person in the Way of Blue to help them defeat their invader. This is the only way to get the rewards since the Way of Blue doesn’t gain anything from being a part of it.

Covenant Reward: Proof of a Concord Kept – 30 of these will get you the Darkmoon Ring and the Darkmoon Blade Miracle

Blades of the Darkmoon

When a member of the Way of Blue faces a dark spirit, the Blades of the Darkmoon, by an ancient accord, help to root out the invader.

How to join: Obtained from Company Captain Yorshka upon talking to her and performing the “Darkmoon Loyalty” gesture at the Prison Tower in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. You have to obtain the “Darkmoon Loyalty” Gesture from Sirris of the Sunless Realm to be able to do this.

This is exactly like the Blue Sentinels. If you have this Covenant equipped, you will be summoned into the world of a person that has the Way of Blue equipped. You will earn the exact same rewards from both this COvenant and the Blue Sentinels, so it is up to you to determine which one you want to be a part of. It doesn’t make a difference either way though so keep that in mind.

Covenant Reward: Proof of a Concord Kept – 30 of these will get you the Darkmoon Ring and the Darkmoon Blade Miracle

Rosaria’s Fingers

Rosaria’s Fingers collect tongues in her name. Some do it to be reborn; others do it to help comfort their voiceless goddess.

How to join: Talk to Saint Rosaria in the Cathedral of the Deep. It can be confusing finding the room she is in, but there is a Bonfire in front of her so you only need to find this room once.

This is a PVP Covenant that allows you to invade the worlds of random people. It is up to you to defeat them. Once you defeat them, you will gain a Pale Tongue. These items will allow you to deepen your allegiance with the Covenant or it will let you reallocate your stats with Rosaria in her bed-chamber. It is probably the best way to get Pale Tongues.

Covenant Reward: Pale Tongue – 30 of these will get you the Obscuring Ring and the Man-Grub’s Staff

Mound-Makers

The mound-makers wish only to add to their mounds, becoming mad spirits whether summoned as co-operators or invaders. They are blithe to those around them, for in their minds, any kill might lead to another shackle.

How to join: To join the covenant as early as possible, the player must not have fought the Curse-rotted Greatwood before joining. The Greatwood may be defeated at no penalty once the covenant is joined. You will need to get in the cage of the non-hostile Hollow Manservant carrying the empty cage on his back in the Undead Settlement.

This is a PVP Covenant that has you invading other people’s worlds. The difference between this one and the other Covenants, you don’t necessarily have to defeat the Host of Embers. All you have to do is defeat a certain number of phantoms in the world. You will then be rewarded with Vertebra Shackles which can then be used to deepen your allegiance with the Covenant.

Covenant Reward: Vertebra Shackle – 30 of these will get you the Bloodlust Katana and the Warmth Pyromancy

Watchdogs of Farron

The Watchdogs ensure that the warriors sleep in serenity, by taking the form of loyal spirits and hunting down those who would trespass the woods of Farron.

How to join: Found within the swamp of Farron Keep, the player must find a ladder surrounded by Rotten Slugs. Head up the ladder to find a large non-hostile wolf lying near a bonfire. Speak with the wolf to join the covenant.

This is a PVP Covenant, but it is different from the others. The whole point of the Covenant is to protect Farron Keep. Once an Embered player passes the Halfway Fortress Bonfire, you will then be sent to their world to stop them from entering the area. It is your job to defeat them for the Wolf of Farron. You will then be rewarded with a Wolf’s Blood Swordgrass if you are successful.

Covenant Reward: Wolf’s Blood Swordgrass – 30 of these will get you the Old Wolf Curved Sword, the Wolf Knight’s Greatshield, and the Wolf Ring

Aldrich Faithful

The faithful ensure that Aldrich, Devourer of Gods, remains undisturbed, by taking the form of loyal spirits and hunting down those who would trespass the ruined cathedral.

How to join: From the Pontiff Sulyvahn bonfire, proceed onward and make way to the other side of the large courtyard. Upon entering the main building on the opposite side, hit the wall on the left to reveal an illusory wall. Climb down the large ladder to reach a big, flooded hall. In one corner of the room lie the remains of Archdeacon McDonnell. Interacting with him allows access to the covenant.

This is a Covenant very similar to the Watchdogs Covenant, but the only difference is that it is another area that you need to defend. If you are a part of the Aldrich Covenant, it is your job to protect the courtyard past the Pontiff Bonfire all the way up to the Anor Londo Bonfire. If anyone that is Embered goes into this area, you will be summoned to help defeat them.

Covenant Reward: Human Dregs – 30 of these will get you the Great Deep Soul Sorcery and the Archdeacon’s Great Staff

Spears of the Church (The Ringed City DLC)

The Spears of the Church watch over the Princess’ slumber, and when the church is compromised by a trespasser, the Judicator summons them as loyal spirits to eliminate the threat. Loyal spirits summoned as Spears of the Church are granted a blessing of protection.

How to join: The player must have defeated Darkeater Midir and acquired the Spears of the Church covenant item. To join the covenant, all you need to do is equip the Spears of the Church covenant item.

This is the most unique Covenant in the game. It is a PVP Covenant but it is the only Covenant that doesn’t require the person to be Embered to summon you. If you are a part of this Covenant, you will be summoned for a 1v1 with a person going into the Judicator Argo boss fight. You will have to defeat them to get rewarded so make sure you are ready for some difficult fights ahead of you.

Covenant Reward: Filanore’s Spear Ornament – 30 of these will get you Young Grass Dew and the Divine Spear Fragment
