The Fire Giant is the boss before you reach the Forge of Giants, a point of no return for the ending of Elden Ring. How to defeat the boss? What is the boss weak to? What strategies can you use to beat it? Are there ways to cheese the boss? All will be answered in this ultimate boss guide to beating Fire Giant in Elden Ring.
The fight against the Fire Giant isn’t going to be an easy one. Don’t be afraid to die and learn his moveset in the process. In the first phase punish his left leg as it is his weak point. As for the second phase, staying underneath him is always the right strategy. Summon your best spirit ash for the fight. And stay calm, as this boss will test every drop of patience in you.
Let’s look at the best strategies and builds in this boss guide that can help us easily defeat Fire Giant in Elden Ring.
Is Fire Giant Optional?
Fire Giant is not an optional boss in Elden Ring. He must be defeated to initiate the ending sequence of the game.
Strategies for Defeating Fire Giant
Below are some strategies for defeating the Fire Giant boss in Elden Ring. The build you selected will determine the approach you should go for. We will cover the basic melee/magic caster strategies here:
Melee Strategy
Starting off the Fire Giant fight, you want to start riding on Torrent toward the boss. It is preferred by some players to be on torrent the entire time for this fight.
The boss will start off by sending out a big shock wave of snow toward you. It is avoidable if you can jump at the correct time. It is rather hard to time the jump just right and even if you get hit, just brush off the snow and get back on the horse, literally.
In phase 1, you should focus all your attacks on the left leg (your right) with the splint. A few successful hits will break this splint and will expose the boss’s wounded weak point.
From here on out, all you have to do is stay underneath the boss most of the time and keep hacking away at the exposed flesh of that leg for significant damage output.
While you are underneath the boss, he will create these AOE flame vents from the ground. They don’t last very long and they don’t actually have that big of an AOE.
So either move away from the radius or if you feel comfortable and there is space between the vents then stand near the leg and whale on his leg.
Occasionally the boss will send out flame orbs that track you slowly. For those who want to get close to him, will trigger their proximity mine nature and will explode after some delay. So as soon as you see them, run through them on Torrent so that they explode out of the way.
Staying on its left leg and chopping it down remains the strategy. If you notice that the boss is standing and his foot is tracking you then there is an incoming plate smash. Get out of the way or you will become a sticker.
Keep the pressure on the foot and around 50% health he will transition into phase 2.
In this phase, you can immediately stun the boss as soon as he bends down after the cutscene. His chest eye will be near the ground, and you should be on Torrent for your weapon’s attack to reach the eye. If you do it right, he will be stance broken, giving you the opportunity to perform a critical strike on his eye.
Just be careful, he recovers really fast after the critical strike and can practically one-shot you with the subsequent attack. Run away on Torrent ASAP before he recovers.
Throughout phase two, you should stay near the boss’s left leg which will be missing now. This is because whenever the boss rolls, the missing foot will go over as compared to the other one which can hurt you.
Maintain the same strategy as before and hack away at his missing leg area and watch out for his rolls. He will miss you for the most part. Keep moving back to the leg after he rolls away.
The boss has a couple of additional fire attacks during this phase. He keeps the proximity orb attack from phase one. He also keeps the fireball attack from that phase too. The boss can also breathe fire out of the mouth on its chest. Be extra vigilant for that.
If you notice that the boss is attempting to stand up while you’re underneath him, chances are he’s going to plop on top of you. That attack is a little unpredictable especially if you’re relying on chopping the removed limb area.
When you see the boss rolls in the opposite direction from where he normally rolls, there’s a good chance that he’s going to roll again immediately and when that happens he might roll on top of you and sometimes one-shot you.
If you notice that the boss is breathing fire from his chest, it’s going to track you. For this, pick a direction and start galloping on Torrent. Do not change directions since the tracking on this attack is very tight. The same goes for the fireball attacks.
Occasionally, the boss’s chest mouth will erupt like a volcano, hurling tons of flaming rocks around him. When you see this happening, immediately move in behind/underneath the boss, near the leg. You will be safe in this location. The attack goes on for a while, giving you a large window to really lay into him.
Keep your health topped up at all times. This boss hits extra hard and most times, he will kill you if your health is not full.
Magic/Faith Strategy
Magic and Faith build should follow the same strategy as melee builds. Staying underneath or behind the boss will negate many of his attacks.
Quick casting and hard-hitting sorceries like Comet and Stars of Ruin can make quick work of the leg’s weak spot. As for incantations, Rotten Breath and Pest Threads will deal the most damage to this huge target.
In phase two, many of his attacks are stationary, giving you ample time to lob your spells in. When he summons the fire vents from the ground or the mouth volcano eruption, these are the longest windows to go casting crazy.
Having a Spirit Summon to take some of the pressure off you while you cast your spells is a good strategy. Black Knife Tiche is the perfect Spirit Ash for this fight. She moves swiftly and keeps up with the boss’s movements, all the while pulling constant aggro. Her attacks are very effective against the boss’s large health pool.
