Elden Ring is a sea of different types of gameplay and builds, but one that fascinates the most is the Magic side of the spectrum. Though physical damage or melee is very much viable, the spectacle and various elemental prowess of Magic catch the attention of most audiences. Magic, too, is divided into two different types Sorcery and Incantations.
Incantations and Sorcery are further subdivided into different casting schools, each with a particular purpose and damage type; the layers of gameplay in Elden Ring are extensive.
1. Black Flame

- Faith Requirement: 20
- Description: Throws a ball of raging black fire.
- Stamina Cost: 25
This basic incantation throws a ball of Black Flame at an enemy. It deals fire damage when the ball hits the enemy and applies the Black flame effect, which deals 2-5% of the total HP damage over the next 2 seconds.
The initial damage is scalable with Faith, but the percentage based on overtime damage stays the same. You can also charge the ball to deal extra damage and explode on impact for a more AOE-based attack.
Black Flame can be acquired by giving the Godskin Prayerbook to any Incantation merchant like Brother Corhyn or Miriel, Pastor of Vows, for 7500 Runes. You can get the Godskin Prayerbook by unlocking a fog room with a Stonesword Key in Stormveil Castle. The exact location is linked here.
2. Black Flame Blade
- FP Cost: 15
- Faith Requirement: 17
- Description: Enchants right-hand armament with black flame.
- Stamina Cost: 10
This coats the weapon with only Physical based damage, with black flame dealing the particular damage with each weapon swing. This lasts for a short duration, only 6 seconds, but the casting speed is fairly quick and can be applied between attacks without worrying about getting stuck in an animation.
It damages for 2 seconds when the weapon hits the target dealing 20 damage along with 20 more for every 1000 HP the enemy has, resulting in 2% damage over time.
Same way as Black Flame, the Black Flame Blade can be acquired by giving the Godskin Prayerbook to any Incantation merchant like Brother Corhyn or Miriel, Pastor of Vows, for 6000 Runes. 3. Scouring Black Flame

- Faith Requirement: 28
- Description: Sweeps area before caster with black flame.
- Stamina Cost: 36
This ranged attack sweeps a wider area in front of the player, perfect for dealing with multiple enemies running toward you. It can be charged to deal extra damage and go further than normal.
This is an ineffective spell and will only be beneficial if you are rocking every item that boosts the Godslayer incantations. This spell is useful in tight corridors or straight pillars of enemies that stay within the spread of the spell.
Dropped by killing the Godskin Apostle in the Windmill Village in the northeast Altus Plateau region, Location marked below.
4. Noble Presence
- FP Cost: 20
- Faith Requirement: 26
- Description: Thrust out belly with gusto to unleash repelling shockwave.
- Stamina Cost: 35
This lets you send out an explosion in your immediate radius dealing Black flame damage. The explosion is very effective against smaller human-based enemies as they are thrown in the air. This specific Incantation is further boosted by 20% by the Godskin Noble Robe chest piece.
The Incantation can also be charged up for more damage output. It is a harder spell to land as the range is not that huge, and the time it takes is relatively long too, but if you time it right, then you can deal a great amount of damage.

5. Black Flame Ritual
- FP Cost: 36
- Faith Requirement: 42
- Description: Summons circle of black flame pillars around the caster.
- Stamina Cost: 39
This creates a circle of Black flame around the player that stays in place for some duration and deals a black flame effect to any stepping onto it. Perfect for dealing with surrounding enemies and trapping aggressive enemies to rush towards you only to be burned.
It can also be used for zoning due to its sustained presence once cast. You can also increase the size of the circle by charging the spell before releasing it.
Found in the Spiritcaller Cave on the Mountaintops of the Giants from defeating the Godskin Apostle & Godskin Noble in a consecutive boss encounter. The location of the cave is marked below.
6. Black Flame’s Protection
- FP Cost: 30
- Faith Requirement: 30
- Description: Increases physical damage negation.
- Stamina Cost: 13
This is a personal buff that increases physical-based damage negation by 35%. On the contrary, it takes away the healing power of any healing source, like flasks, by 20%. It lasts 70 seconds, so there is no worry about running out mid-fight.
It can be stacked with other damage negation spells like Golden Vow. Ideal for builds that don’t rely on healing and know how to dodge most attacks, the overall net impact is in favor of this spell.

Godslayer Seal

This seal will boost Godslayer incantations by 10%, and if you wield two at a time, the effect is stacked up. Incant Scaling of 291 at +25 upgrade level with 60 Faith and 329 Incant Scaling at +25 upgrade level with 80 Faith.
