How To Beat King Slime in Terraria (Ultimate Guide)

How To Beat King Slime in Terraria (Ultimate Guide)

The King Slime is one of the starting pre-hardmode bosses in Terraria. In this article, we will cover in much detail what facing this boss is like and what you should do to prepare for the fight. So get ready for the ultimate guide to beating King Slime.

King Slime can be summoned in Terraria in multiple ways; by using the Slime Crown or naturally if some conditions are met, or at the end of a Sime Rain Event. The melee class is somewhat weak compared to other classes for this boss.

King Slime is a relatively easy boss in Terraria since his behavior mimics that of a regular slime enemy. Lets take a look at the strategies and builds you can use to defeat him quickly.

How to Spawn King Slime?

Spawning King Slime in Terraria

Defeating the Fighting King Slime is entirely optional and not necessary for advancing in the game, but the player may receive rewards in the form of currency and valuable items upon its defeat.

There are three different methods to summon King Slime:

  1. By using a Slime Crown, players can instantly spawn King Slime. To craft a Slime Crown, combine 20 Gel with either a Gold Crown or a Platinum Crown at a Demon or Crimson Altar.
  2. King Slime has a 1% chance of naturally spawning under the following conditions:
    • The player is located in either the far left or far right sixth of the map.
    • The depth at the potential spawn point is above zero.
    • It is daytime.
    • There must be standard green grass at the potential spawn point.
  3. During the Slime Rain event, King Slime will appear if players kill 150 slimes using lava, traps, summoned minions, or by their own hand. If King Slime has already been defeated in the world, only 75 slime kills are required to spawn it.

How to Defeat King Slime?

Defeating the King Slime boils down to the class you are using. Some classes will find it harder to beat this boss, while for others, it will be a breeze. We will go over which weapons best suit the class when fighting the boss.

Melee Class Strategy

If you manage to acquire Projectile Swords such as the Enchanted Sword, Ice Blade, Terragrim, Blade of Grass, or Starfury, it is highly recommended to utilize them. Basic metal swords should be avoided, as they will trigger the spawning of numerous Slimes and possess high contact damage, particularly in higher difficulty levels.

For attacking King Slime from a distance, an Enchanted or Ice Boomerang proves to be an excellent choice. Alternatively, you can consider using the Flaming Mace or Chain Knife, which offer similar advantages.

If you have explored the Underground Desert, obtaining the Storm Spear will provide you with another effective projectile weapon that works well against King Slime.

The Rally is another useful option worth considering. If you want to venture into the Underground Jungle, the Amazon is a great melee weapon choice.

Melee users can opt to wear the Cactus Armor for its contact damage against the spawning slime, although you should avoid it for higher difficulties. The Gladiator Armor is also a good option to enhance combat capabilities.

Ranged Class Strategy

Ranged Class Strategy King Slime

An affordable yet potent option for ranged attacks is a Bow, such as the Gold Bow or Platinum Bow, which offer a good balance of cost and power.

To maximize your effectiveness, it is recommended to use Frostburn Arrows or Jester’s Arrows as ammunition. Frostburn Arrows provide high single-target damage, while Jester’s Arrows possess a piercing effect, allowing you to hit multiple targets.

The Snowball Cannon is another formidable ranged weapon that packs a punch against King Slime.

For those who have engaged in fishing, Frost Daggerfish are strong projectiles that can pierce through enemies, making them a valuable asset.

While all guns are highly effective against King Slime, they tend to be more challenging to acquire compared to other ranged weapons.

If you prefer explosives, sticky grenades are an excellent choice, offering the highest damage output during the pre-hardmode stage. However, please note that they do not adhere to bosses.

Rangers can acquire Fossil Armor to enhance their ranged capabilities.

Mage Class Strategy

In this stage of Terraria, gem staves are the predominant magic weapons. The Emerald staff and its stronger counterparts prove to be effective against King Slime. Additionally, the Wand of Sparking, which is easily obtainable, performs well in this fight as a magic weapon.

If you have managed to break Crimson Hearts, the Crimson Rod can be a helpful tool in this battle.

Although quite rare, the Gray Zapinator is an incredibly powerful magic weapon that can deal significant damage.

For mages with access to The Underworld, the Demon Scythe becomes an exceptionally potent weapon choice.

To bolster their magical prowess, mages can opt to wear either the Wizard set or the Jungle armor. Both options provide valuable bonuses and enhancements to magical abilities.

Summoner Class Strategy

For summoners, it is advisable to carry either a Vampire Frog Staff or a Flinx Staff as their primary summoning weapons.

To significantly boost damage output, the Leather Whip can be easily purchased and used in conjunction with the summoning weapons.

If you have access to Underground Jungle materials, the Snapthorn serves as a much more powerful alternative to consider.

In the absence of other summoning weapons, the Slime Staff, although difficult to obtain, or a Finch Staff can serve as decent choices for summoners.

To enhance summoning abilities, it is recommended that summoners acquire the Flinx Fur Coat, along with any helmet and leggings of their choice. It is preferable to wear armor made from ores for additional benefits.

Other Strategies

strategies for defeating King Slime

Platform/Minecart Strategy:

Create 18-20 blocks high platforms spanning 35-50 blocks in length. Move back and forth on the platform, continuously attacking King Slime.

If he or his slimes manage to reach the platform, briefly descend and use hooks or double-jumps to return, causing them to follow you by dropping down.

Alternatively, constructing a minecart track instead of a platform requires more effort but provides even greater speed advantages.

This strategy can prove beneficial not only for the King Slime fight but also for future encounters in the game. King Slime will struggle to teleport to the player due to the high speed achieved on a Minecart.

Lava Pit Strategy:

Utilize a Lava Bucket to create a long strip of land with shallow lava (not deep enough to burn items). Scatter some platforms across the area. Jump, use Rocket Boots, or employ a Grappling Hook to move between platforms, ensuring you avoid the lava unless you have Obsidian Skin Potions.

This strategy effectively deals with King Slime’s teleports, causing his minions to perish in the lava. The player doesn’t need to focus on direct combat since the lava inflicts substantial damage.

Another option is to consume an Obsidian Skin Potion and evade it by running beneath King Slime or using Rocket Boots to fly over it.

Death Box Strategy:

To trap King Slime and defeat him, construct a solid box that is large enough to contain him but prevents him from wandering off-screen. Include a bed within the box, which can be placed in a small cubicle for convenience.

Before King Slime spawns, position yourself inside the box with the bed set as your spawn point. When King Slime awakens, he will teleport within the box to attack you.

Deal damage to him during this time. Allow King Slime to kill you, as he tries to hop off-screen but remains trapped within the box. Respawn at the bed and continue attacking him until he is defeated. Repeat this process.

Note: Hardcore players should avoid this strategy as it relies on the player’s death.

What are the Difficulty Differences?

Difficulty Differences

The boss has different stats depending on the difficulty and the phase it is in. These differences are as follows:

Classic Mode

In Classic Mode the King Slime has the following stats:

  • Damage: 40
  • HP: 2000
  • Defense: 10
  • Knockback Resistance: 100%
  • Immune to Poisoned and Confused

King Slime shares similarities with regular Slimes in Terraria: it hops toward the player, aiming to make contact and cause damage. However, King Slime has more health, the ability to teleport, and a larger size.

While this makes it easier to hit, its jumps are unpredictable, with varying heights based on the player’s distance. Failing to anticipate its landing spot can result in damage.

King Slime will teleport to the player if they stray too far, preventing simple offscreen escapes. However, this behavior can be advantageous as it can become trapped in enclosed spaces.

As King Slime’s health diminishes, it becomes smaller and faster, making it more challenging to hit. It will also summon Blue Slimes to distract and hinder the player. Using piercing weapons or ammo is crucial to minimize time and ammunition wasted on the Blue Slimes, focusing instead on King Slime.

Expert Mode

In Expert Mode the King Slime has the following stats:

  • Damage: 64
  • HP: 2800
  • Defense: 10
  • Knockback Resistance: 100%
  • Immune to Poisoned and Confused

King Slime undergoes minimal changes in Expert Mode, mainly having increased damage and health. However, when injured, it will summon Spiked Slimes alongside regular Blue Slimes.

These Spiked Slimes can launch spike volleys at a short distance, making it crucial to wield a weapon capable of piercing multiple targets and attacking from range. This is necessary to prevent being overwhelmed by the barrage of spikes.

Master Mode

In Master Mode the King Slime has the following stats:

  • Damage: 96
  • HP: 3570
  • Defense: 10
  • Knockback Resistance: 100%
  • Immune to Poisoned and Confused

The King Slime will behave the same as in the Expert Mode, although his damage and health will be significantly increased.

Is King Slime Harder Solo or With Friends?

King Slime is a relatively easy boss and can be regarded as the easiest boss in the game. Considering this, this boss remains somewhat unchallenging in single-player or multiplayer. Of course, having a team of prepared players will be beneficial in annihilating his highness.

The boss does receive a health boost when in multiplayer on Expert and higher difficulty, so there is that challenge. Although he is quite uncomplicated, a team can swiftly whittle away his health.

Solo players will find it hard to deal with the army of Slimes that this boss spawns but a simple piercing weapon can quickly turn the tide. On the other hand, a team can take turns in focusing on the boss and his minions.
